Savages director Oliver Stone has always been a controversial filmmaker, but this movie does not have a sharp enough script to match his earlier, more successful efforts. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his co-star, Taylor Kitsch, are acted off the screen by a barrage of other actors wandering into the film and devouring every piece of scenery. The film fails to establish their love triangle with «O» (Blake Lively), destroying Savages’ plot in one fell swoop. It all culminates with a twist ending that feels like a cop-out more than a genuine surprise. However, one upside to the film is the gorgeous, highly-saturated cinematography that truly captures Savages’ setting.

7 Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008)

Still, Godzilla has some truly impressive spectacle and is one of the few movies in which the titular monster is treated as a truly destructive force. However, that violent aspect of the character would be better explored two years later in Hideaki Anno’s Shin Godzilla. Amusingly, between their two MCU appearances as siblings, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play lovers in Godzilla.

20 A Million Little Pieces (2018)

A Million Little Pieces is the second collaboration between Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his wife, director Sam Taylor-Johnson. The couple co-wrote and produced the film together, with Sam directing and Aaron starring as drug addict James Frey. The book that the film is based on was sold as a true story, with the real Frey appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s show, only for many segments of the memoir’s story to be later revealed as pure fiction. The film adaptation makes the bizarre decision not to acknowledge this and plays the story straight. As a result, A Million Little Pieces could have been an affecting drama but merely plays as a collection of clichés.

6 Bullet Train (2022)

Aaron Taylor-Johnson impressively stands out among Bullet Train’s impressive all-star ensemble cast as assassin Tangerine, twin brother of Brian Tyree Henry’s Lemon. Bullet Train wears its influences on its sleeve, paying homage to previous action comedies like Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. Taylor-Johnson has perhaps the slickest and most stylish character among a very flashy cast of characters, including Brad Pitt, Army of the Dead’s Hiroyuki Sanada, and, eventually, Sandra Bullock. While Bullet Train eventually goes off the rails in its third act, metaphorically and literally, it never treats itself too seriously and maintains a fun atmosphere.

18 The King’s Man (2021)

The King’s Man is another disappointing entry in the Kingsmen franchise. Rather than following on from the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The King’s Man is a prequel, taking place around the First World War. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has little more than a cameo as Lance Corporal Archie Reid, a soldier with whom Conrad Oxford (Harris Dickinson) fatally switches places to fight in The Great War. In addition, The King’s Man is a complete tonal mess, never deciding whether to commit to the goofy nature of the first two Kingsman movies or to attempt to capture the seriousness of war movies like 1917.

10 Outlaw King (2018)

Outlaw King picks up where Braveheart leaves off, both in plot and historical inaccuracies. However, it takes a far more gritty and realistic tone. Taylor-Johnson plays James Douglas, a key ally to Chris Pine’s Robert the Bruce, and steals the film out from under him with an incredibly charismatic performance. The film opens with a fantastic long take that establishes all the major players and conflicts, but the rest of the film struggles to match up. Following the opening, the film is at its best in its brutal, bloody, and muddy battle sequences, but Outlaw King regularly fails the real history in favor of telling a well-trodden story.

Taylor-Johnson gave one of his most acclaimed performances in 2016, playing vicious Texan Ray Marcus in Tom Ford’s psychological thriller «Nocturnal Animals.» For the role, he won a surprise Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and was nominated for a BAFTA Award. He then falls in love with Sophie, a young duchess, and their inevitable separation due to their class divide is heartbreakingly realized by Taylor-Johnson. The sequence in and of itself could have made for an excellent short film. Instead, the rest of the film plays out with Norton using his skills as an illusionist to concoct a plan that would allow him a Sophie to be together.

13 Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a disappointing follow-up to 2012’s The Avengers. The film spends much of its energy setting up future MCU storylines rather than telling one cohesive story. This flaw continues with the sheer number of characters competing for screen time; Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch spend much of the film simply as Ultron’s (James Spader) henchpeople. Luckily, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver gets some of the more memorable lines and action scenes («you didn’t see that coming»), but the MCU version of Quicksilver overall pales in comparison to Evan Peters’ in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Film Career, Part 1

Taylor-Johnson made his theatrical film debut in the 2002 British family drama «Tom & Thomas,» playing the titular pair of identical twins. The next year, he portrayed a fictionalized young Charlie Chaplin in the action comedy «Shanghai Knights,» starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. Taylor-Johnson was subsequently in «Dead Cool.» In 2006, he starred in «The Thief Lord» and played the teenaged version of Edward Norton’s protagonist in «The Illusionist.» The next year, Taylor-Johnson appeared in the fantasy film «The Magic Door.» His subsequent credits were «Dummy,» «Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging,» and «The Greatest.» Taylor-Johnson had his breakthrough in 2009 portraying John Lennon in the biographical drama «Nowhere Boy,» directed by Sam Taylor-Wood.

25 Chatroom (2010)

Chatroom does not seem to understand the internet or teenagers, a major issue for a film about teenagers talking to each other on the internet. The film commits the crime of completely wasting an incredibly talented cast that would go on to immense success: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Daniel Kaluuya, Imogen Poots, and practically half the cast of Game of Thrones in Hannah Murray, Michelle Fairley, Jacob Anderson, and Richard Madden. Chatroom’s terrible, stilted dialogue could have resulted in the premature deaths of all of their careers, but luckily they all seem to have prospered despite the film. Ultimately, Chatroom feels like a rejected Black Mirror script.
