While the character of Mabel was inspired by Ariel, that of Stan was based on his own grandfather. Many of the real-life experiences of Hirsch including trick-or-treating with Ariel and living in Piedmont as kids have found place in the series. He came up with a global treasure hunt called Cipher Hunt for the fans of Gravity Falls in July 2016. Clues of the hunt were hidden across the globe and the goal was to find the statue of the character Bill Cipher from the series. The statue was unearthed by the fans in Reedsport, Oregon in two weeks from the hunt. Meanwhile, Hirsch’s tie-in book, Gravity Falls: Journal 3, which he co-authored with Rob Renzetti released on the 26th of that month.

Tropes associated with Alex Hirsch’s works:
- Creator Couple: With Dana Terrace, or at least was. A Tumblr comic by Dana hinted that they may have broke up.
- Deadpan Snarker: This video Alex posted on his Twitter celebrating Gravity Falls’ 10th Anniversary is a compilation of Disney’s Standards & Practices getting offended by the simplest things and Alex’s very exasperated and equally snarky comebacks.
- Man of a Thousand Voices: Each of the characters that he voices sounds vastly different.
- Shrug of God: During a Reddit AMA, Alex had occasionally responded ambiguously to questions with pictures of an Axolotl. The more noteworthy queries was answered years later through Gravity Falls: Journal 3.
- Take That!: Like his ex-girlfriend, he isn’t afraid to scathingly call out far-right politicians, especially Donald Trump during his presidency, as well as calling out Disney on their less-than-moral actions, the most famous in recent memory being during Pride Month 2021 when Disney made a social media post dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community, to which Alex noted that outside of Pride Month, Disney has been cutting representation for the sake of profit.
- Trolling Creator: There’s a very good reason he’s the trope picture, as he did this quite a bit during Gravity Falls’ run. Highlights include:
- Alex replied to a tweet regarding season two that «at least one character will not survive the season. Buckle up».
- The most famous and the reason he’s the picture:
- Fans had theorized about the purpose of the ten symbols depicted around Bill at the end of the theme song, «Dreamscaperers» and «The Stanchurian Candidate»:
- Write What You Know:
- Gravity Falls was based on trips Hirsch and his sister took with their grand-aunt.
- The episode «Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons» was based on attending a Dungeons & Dragons game with Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale during the trio’s time on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.
- Write Who You Know: Gravity Falls was mostly based on Alex Hirsch’s childhood, with Dipper based on his younger self, Mabel on his own twin sister Ariel, Stan on their grandfather, Soos on a college roommate of Alex’s, Wendy on a girl Alex had a crush on, and a number of Wendy’s ex-boyfriends were named after many of Ariel’s.

Gravity Falls Is Darker Than Most Kids Shows:
Alex said: “ We were told that the show was going to be moved to Disney XD halfway through making the season, so there was no coordinated conversation about tone”.
“There’s not a lot of discussion between the creative and programming ends. In terms of the tone of the second season, we’re experimenting a lot more. Season 1 was just about getting to know the characters, about trying to give a hint of the mythology and just trying to be as funny and fun as possible. In Season 2, we’re digging much more heavily into the mythology and our characters are experiencing higher stakes, tenser situations and, in a few instances, more menacing villains. As a result, the conspiracy/X-Files/spookiness aspect of the series definitely gets a stronger highlight in Season 2 than it did in Season 1, but we still hope to balance that out with some traditionally silly Gravity Fallsy-episodes”.
Early life and education[]
Hirsch was born in Piedmont, California, on June 18, 1985. His parents divorced when he was young. He has a twin sister named Ariel (the inspiration for Mabel Pines, with himself being the inspiration for Dipper) and three half-sisters: Lauren, Katrina, and Jessica. His father is Jewish, and he was raised agnostic, celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah. He placed many of his real-life experiences in the show, such as living in Piedmont, California, and trick-or-treating with his sister Ariel as cats. He also based the series off the summers he and Ariel spent with their great aunt (or graunty) Lois (the inspiration for Stan Pines), at her cabin in the woods, between the ages of 9 and 13. Both he and his sister wished they would go on the daring adventures that Mabel and Dipper go on in the show. He based Mabel on his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch, and Grunkle Stan off of his Grandpa Stan, and based the entire series loosely on his own childhood summers. He gave Mabel a pet pig named Waddles because his sister had always wanted one when she was young.
He Has Always Wanted To Make Cartoons:
“As long as I can recall I’ve always wanted to make cartoons. When I went to California Institute of the Arts, I was classmates with a lot of like-minded weirdos, some of whom have gone on to create other cartoon shows—J.G. Quintel, Regular Show; Pen Ward, Adventure Time. We were all friends in school and pushed each other and made each other laugh. It’s been a direct progression from elementary school kid watching Disney cartoons to kid-at-heart currently making cartoons for kids, for Disney”, Alex Hirsch told Time Magazine.
Hirsch’s first job after graduating from CalArts was as a writer and storyboard artist for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack on Cartoon Network where he worked alongside fellow CalArts alumni, J. G. Quintel, Patrick McHale and Pendleton Ward (his co-writer on the show)
Alex Hirsch would go on to create the pilot for the Disney Channel series, Fish Hooks along with Maxwell Atoms and future Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland.

Political Views:
PC: Alex Hirsch Twitter
Hirsch is quite outspoken about his political beliefs on social media. He strongly opposes Donald Trump, calling him “a lying, self centered, woman-hating sociopath”.
On September 18, 2020 he tweeted that the U.S. Left cannot afford a “noble defeat” and that the 2020 election is extremely important. In the same thread, he said that what it means is “leftists, libs & moderates” coming together to defeat “the far right fringe cult in power” in a “blue wave,” and using “every lever of power possible” to push for a better world as soon as Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are defeated.
Additionally, he criticized Doug Collins for his anti-reproductive rights stance, and called for people to donate to “all downballot blue candidates” because of “the danger America is in right now.”
At the same time, he called for more justices in the U.S. Supreme Court with a Democratic President, pushing the Democratic Party leftward, said that “we simply don’t have the luxury of letting Trump win to make an abstract point,” and described voting for a third party in the 2020 election as a “suicidally terrible idea…as useful as thoughts & prayers to shootings” and wasting your vote.
Additionally, he called for voting “straight blue” in the election, adding that there is a choice between science and “a conspiracy cult” and that Joe Biden was not his first choice but that he will still support him.
Hirsch supports abortion rights, LGBT rights, immigration, raising taxes on the wealthy, and gun restrictions.
