14. Trees (The Happening)

Photo: Twentieth Century Fox

The trees are swaying ominously — prepare for the impending environmental onslaught! The trees … the trees! It’s not necessarily Wahlberg’s fault that M. Night Shyamalan’s climate thriller — in which the villain is … wind — is so ridiculous and that he consistently looks so ridiculous in it; there aren’t many actors who would have come out of this deeply misguided project unscathed. But Wahlberg is particularly adrift here. Seeing him lost and bewildered about what exactly is supposed to be going on here is, well — it’s difficult to watch. Maybe Wahlberg and the trees were just never going to be friends. Perhaps a goat is a better bet. What up, goat?

New Kids on the Block,

All the Money in the World Controversy

After Kevin Spacey’s scandals broke, the studio behind the J. Paul Getty biography «All the Money in the World» made the stunning to decision to recast and re-film his scenes with an entirely new actor. As a result, Mark and his co-star Michelle Williams were both called back to perform scenes again. A new controversy erupted when it was later revealed that Wahlberg received an extra salary of $1.5 million for his work on the reshoots while Michelle Williams received less than $1,000 for her work.

In response, Wahlberg donated the money to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which helps to cover the legal expenses of women who experienced workplace sexual harassment and have come forward with their cases under the Time’s Up movement.

Lone Survivor (2014)

In the first of several collaborations with Peter Berg, Mark Wahlberg teamed up with the Friday Night Lights filmmaker to tell the story of Operation Red Wings, where a four-man team of Navy SEALs were tasked with the dangerous mission of tracking down Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Lone Survivor is a gripping, impressively suspenseful look at the Afghanistan war; it’s at its best when it focuses on the life-threatening plight of our soldiers. Though not without its flaws, Lone Survivor is benefitted from taunt direction and strong performances, notably with Wahlberg as veteran Marcus Luttrell. It’s a visceral, engaging war drama, one that’s not afraid to show the brutal realities of the men who put their lives on the line for their country. You can see why it inspired a long-standing professional relationship between Wahlberg and Berg — even their later works didn’t match this success.

Ted (2012)

While Mark Wahlberg is celebrated as an action star or as a dramatic performer, his comedic skills shouldn’t be overlooked. Indeed, some of Wahlberg’s best performances come from comedies, including Seth MacFarlane’s Ted. Playing John Bennett, a lifelong Boston native who, as a child, magically discovers his teddy bear has come to life, only to become a stoner burnout alongside his stuffed childhood buddy whenever the world stops caring. Wahlberg flexes his talents for playing a glib, goodhearted man-child who tries to disconnect from his friend when he tries to move on. The lighthearted, amicable movie carries a breezy, easygoing pace, benefitted by Wahlberg’s surprisingly easy chemistry with his CG co-star, voiced by Seth MacFarlane. Mark Wahlberg’s performance goes a long way towards selling the illusion and making you endeared to his unorthodox bromance. For that reason in particular, Ted features one of Wahlberg’s most affable, unexpectedly heartfelt performances.

Career

The following is a detailed explanation of Mark Wahlberg’s career timeline, and how his ventures have evolved over time.

Most people are aware of Wahlberg’s Hollywood acting career, as perhaps his early days as a model and rapper.

However, you might be surprised to know just how many other business ventures Wahlberg has launched throughout the last 10 to 15 years.

Let’s go into detail…

Marky Mark

As we briefly mentioned above, Mark started out his career in the entertainment business as a rapper.

As a teenager, he would rap with a group of his friends, including his brother: who became the star of the ‘New Kids on the Block’.

With the help of his brother Donnie, several of the records Mark helped produce reached the Billboard Top 100 Charts.

Modeling

In 1992, Wahlberg became a model for Calvin Klein, modeling their underwear collection in several photo ads, which were later followed up with television advertisements.

Several magazine and TV promotions also featured Wahlberg, as well as Vanity Fair‘s annual Hall of Fame issue.

Acting Career

Today, we’ve seen him take the lead role in some world-famous movies, including the likes of Max Payne, Ted, Lone Survivor, The Gambler, Daddy’s Home, Patriots Day, and more.

Wahlberg has collaborated with the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Mila Kunis, Will Ferrell, Mel Gibson, John Cena, and many more.

Closest to the Hole Productions

After Wahlberg’s initial success as an actor in movies such as “The Big Hit” and “The Perfect Storm”, Mark created his own production company in 2004; Closest to the Hole Productions.

Why that name? Wahlberg is a big-time golfer, and this might remind you of a similar situation with Adam Sandler‘s ‘Happy Madison Productions’.

The company has produced dozens of movies, most of which Wahlberg plays the lead character. These include:

  • Lone Survivor
  • Patriots Day
  • Instant Family
  • The Fighter
  • Deepwater Horizon
  • Mile 22
  • The Gambler
  • Spencer Confidential
  • Infinite

Wahlburgers

In 2011, Mark founded the ‘Wahlburgers’ restaurant chain with his brothers, Donnie and Paul.

As you can probably tell by the clever name, Wahlburgers is a burger restaurant chain that is now in 50 locations and bringing in an estimated $100 million/year in revenue.

This is probably the most well-known of all of Mark’s business ventures, mainly due to having its own reality show, ‘Wahlburgers’ on the A&E network for 6 years from 2014-2019.

Aquahydrate

Aquahydrate is an electrolyte-water company that Mark invested in back in 2012.

At the time, the company’s financials were not in the best shape, and Wahlberg, as well as rapper Sean Combs, invested a combined $20 million into the company.

Performance Inspired

In 2016, Wahlberg launched a supplement company, Performance Inspired, alongside Tom Dowd who has tons of experience within the industry.

The range of products includes common sports supplements such as creatine powder, BCAAs, pre-workout, and protein powders.

According to Datanyze, it’s estimated that the company brings in $4.1 million/year in revenue.

F45

F45 is a chain of group-class fitness gyms specializing in a HIIT-style workout program.

The company has close to 2000 locations worldwide, with the majority of those being spread out across the United States and Australia.

Wahlberg invested in the company during its pre-IPO stage, and although he has since sold an unknown number of shares, it’s reported that he still owns around 1.73% of the company.

The company has struggled in the past few years, with its share price falling to 25% of its original $16 IPO price.

Municipal Clothing Line

Municipal is the latest Mark Wahlberg project; the actor started his own clothing line in 2020 and has big plans for its future.

The brand creates athleisure-focused clothing that people can wear anywhere and everywhere, providing both comfort and functionality.

Boogie Nights (1997)

Even though Mark Wahlberg has several career highlights, it’s one of the movie star’s earliest leading roles in 1997’s Boogie Nights that remains his high point. In the unforgettable role of Dirk Diggler, a boyishly handsome young Californian who rises the ranks of the ’70s porn industry thanks to his, err, , Wahlberg’s guides us through writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic sophomore film, which runs nearly three hours but hardly feels its length. Even though it also features career-best work from Burt Reynolds and Heather Graham, as well as excellent supporting roles from Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, , and the late, great Phillip Seymour Hoffman, this is Wahlberg’s movie, and he shines so bright.

Taking us through the sprawling journey of this porn star’s rise and fall through this subsection of the movie industry, it remains one of the finest movies of the late ’90s, and that’s certainly thanks to Mark Wahlberg’s towering performance. While Wahlberg has for , he shouldn’t. It’s the epic film that proved the one-hit-wonder rap musician had what it took to become a bonafide A-lister. It’s only ironically fitting that this tale of a rising-and-falling porn star would go on to make its leading film star .

There are also some notable snubs in this list, including (but not limited to), The Other Guys (which just barely missed the cut), Date Night, We Own The Night, Shooter, The Perfect Storm, Rock Star, Contraband, Pain & Gain, Patriot’s Day and The Gambler. Whether you agree with all the movies ranked above or not, it’s clear that Mark Wahlberg has amassed an impressive career as an actor/producer, and we hope to see more quality movies from him in the future. Also, say hi to your mother for me, alright?

‘Boogie Nights’

After two more attention-getting performances in Fear (1996) and Traveller (1997), Wahlberg cemented his artistic and commercial reputation with a starring role as dishwasher turned porn star Eddie Adams (a.k.a. Dirk Diggler) in Paul Thomas Anderson’s buzzworthy Boogie Nights (1997). Though his next two films — The Big Hit (1998) and The Corruptor (1999) — were less than successful, Wahlberg returned with a bang in the acclaimed Three Kings (1999). The film co-starred George Clooney, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze as renegade U.S. servicemen in the Persian Gulf during the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War conflict.

13. Winston Duke (Spenser Confidential)

Photo: Netflix

Wahlberg has made several films with director Peter Berg, but this Netflix B-movie is the dullest, finding the star portraying Robert B. Parker’s semi-iconic private eye who has just been let out of jail and who is paired with another ex-con (Winston Duke) to solve a series of murders. Duke, a fine actor from Black Panther and Nine Days, gets very little to do in Spenser Confidential, which tries (and fails) to be a buddy comedy and a whodunit and a midrange action flick. Mostly, it feels like so many Netflix productions that seem dreamed up by an algorithm and then presented to undemanding viewers who will mindlessly watch them.

Closest to the Hole Productions

In addition to being an A-list actor, Wahlberg is also a successful producer, serving as producer on many of the films he stars in. Through his production company, Closest to the Hole, he executive produced the HBO series «Entourage» (2004-2011), a show loosely based on his own experiences in Hollywood. When the series was active, he earned $3 million per year as an executive producer. He also produced the film version of Entourage.

Mark has executive produced the series «Boardwalk Empire,» «Ballers» and «How to Make It in America.»

Closest to the Hole has also produced a number of films including «Lone Survivor», «The Fighter», «Deepwater Horizon», «Instant Family» and «Patriots Day.»

To date, Mark’s production company has produced films that have generated nearly $900 million at the global box office.

The Fighter (2010)

In what remains his fourth and final collaboration with writer/director David O. Russell, The Fighter is another example of a sports biopic that could’ve easily gone south had it not been for the clear talent of the actor and filmmaker on hand. Centered on Mickey Ward, a professional Boston boxer hoping for greatness and driven by his older half-brother, Dicky, played by an Oscar-winning Christian Bale in an incredible performance, it’s easy to see why Wahlberg took on the muscle-bound role. But his performance in this movie is quite easily among his best, and he surrounds himself with one of his strongest casts to date, including Amy Adams, Oscar-winning Melissa Leo and the aforementioned Bale. Even when The Fighter turns a little too predictable by its final moments, it’s clearly a hell of a contender. It’s very much apparent that this Wahlberg passion project was one worth fighting for.

Real Estate

In 2001 Mark paid $4.95 million for a home in Beverly Hills. He listed this home for sale in 2015 for $30 million. This house features seven bedrooms and eleven bathrooms, spread out over the 9000 square foot main home and a nearby guesthouse. It sits on almost two acres of land and is surrounded by lush, landscaped grounds, which include a pool with a waterfall, a golf course, a spa, a basketball court, and a personal fitness center. In April 2018, Wahlberg sold the home for $12.4 million.

For a little over a decade, Mark’s primary residence was an absolutely stunning estate in the gated Beverly Park community of Beverly Hills. Wahlberg and his wife bought one of Beverly Park’s last-remaining undeveloped lots in May 2009 for $8.25 million. Sitting on 6+ acres, he hired famed architect Richard Landry to design what became a mildly-ridiculous (in a good way) 30,000 square-foot main house. Construction costs alone likely topped north of $20 million. The final product features a golf course, basketball court, large pool, movie theater, and much more. Here is a video tour of Mark’s Beverly Park mansion:

Mark listed this home for sale in April 2022 for $87.5 million. After not getting any buyers for several months, in November 2022 Mark pulled the listing from the MLS. He then re-listed the home just a month later for $79.5 million.

In February 2023 they finally sold their Beverly Park mansion for $55 million. By selling their mansion as Nevada residents, they saved around $3.5 million in taxes they otherwise would have paid had they remained in California.

In August 2022 Mark and his wife paid $15.6 million for two vacant lots located within the ultra-exclusive gated community called The Summit in the suburbs of Las Vegas. While waiting for a mansion to be built, Wahlberg paid $14.5 million for a 7,300 square foot townhouse in the exclusive resort community in Summerlin, The Summit Club. In September 2023 Mark sold his Summit Club townhouse for $16.6 million.

Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch

By the time Wahlberg had emerged from prison, his older brother Donnie had rocketed to stardom as one of five fresh-faced members of the pop band New Kids on the Block. Donnie soon decided to help his younger brother find his own niche in the music business.

What Mark Wahlberg lacked in singing ability, he made up for in charisma and good looks; he took on the name of Marky Mark, and with a DJ, backup dancers (dubbed «the Funky Bunch») and Donnie’s producing help, he recorded a debut album, Music for the People (1991). Driven by the success of the hit singles «Good Vibrations» and «Wildside» — and by Marky Mark’s readiness to discard his clothes onstage and in his videos — the album went platinum.

One of pop music’s hottest new commodities, Wahlberg (and his rock-hard physique) became even more ubiquitous when he signed a two-year contract with the designer Calvin Klein to model underwear. His raucous public persona — he once was involved in a much-talked-about brawl with Madonna’s entourage at a Los Angeles nightclub — only served to increase his popular appeal, until news began surfacing about his criminal past and his possibly racist and homophobic tendencies.

In 1993 this part of Wahlberg’s personal life was seriously questioned when he was accused of condoning blatantly homophobic remarks made on a British talk show by his fellow guest, reggae singer Shabba Ranks. Combined with the disappointing sales of the Funky Bunch’s second album, You Gotta Believe (1992), the public criticism of Wahlberg’s career seemed to be steering his career towards certain death. The 22-year-old’s survival instincts kicked in, however, and he soon made a move into another realm of the entertainment world — acting.

Other Investments

In July 2013, Wahlberg became a part-owner in a Barbados-based cricket team. In 2015, he recruited rapper Sean «Diddy» Combs and billionaire investor Ron Burkle to invest in a bottled water company called Aquahydrate. He is also a co-founder of a sports nutrition company called Performance Inspired. In 2017, he participated in a $6 million funding round for the sneaker resale marketplace StockX. In 2018, Wahlberg and business partner Jay Feldman bought a Chevy dealership in Columbus, Ohio. The dealership was renamed Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet. In 2021, Wahlberg invested in the Flecha Azul Tequila brand.

9. Tom Holland (Uncharted)

Photo: Clay Enos/Sony Pictures

Now 50, Wahlberg shifts to Mentor Role in this adaptation of the PlayStation video game, taking impressionable Nathan Drake (Holland) under his wing. For those who have watched the onetime Marky Mark grow up onscreen, it’s touching to see him now be the unlikely comic relief in Uncharted as young cocky Drake takes the lead on a globe-trotting, treasure-hunting adventure. There’s definitely an older-brother vibe that Wahlberg brings to Victor Sullivan, but the movie is so indebted to its cinematic influences that it’s hard for the two actors to build a rapport. Essentially, Holland is playing Peter Parker, while Wahlberg is doing another variation of his tough-guy routine. But if you’ve ever wanted to see an action sequence set inside a Papa John’s, have we got good news for you.

  • рано утром (примерно в 4:30 утра);

по понедельникам упражнения на руки и грудные мышцы;
вторник посвящался нагрузкам на ноги, спину и двуглавую мышцу плеча;
в четверг актёр прокачивал всё тело;
в пятницу особое внимание уделялось нагрузкам на бицепс;

  • жимы штанги вниз головой;
  • армейский жим (стоя и сидя);
  • упражнения на брусьях;

  • в первом подходе было 10 подъёмов (при весе в 20 кг);
  • во втором — до 8 подходов (вес увеличивался до 25 кг);

  • подъёмы штанги;
  • подъёмы двух гантелей из положения стоя;

Personal Life and Daily Routine

Mark Wahlberg married model Rhea Durham in 2009. They began dating in 2001. Together, they have four children.

Mark maintains a famously spartan daily workout and eating routine. In October 2018, he broke the daily routine down in a series of Instagram posts:

2:30 am: wake up

2:45 am: pray

3:15 am: breakfast – «I start out with steel oats, peanut butter, blueberries and eggs for breakfast. Then I have a protein shake — Performance Inspired Nutrition Vanilla Latte Shake — three turkey burgers, five pieces of sweet potato.»

3:40 to 5:15 am: work out

5:30 am: post-workout meal

«At 8 o’clock, I have about 10 turkey meatballs. At 10:30, I have a grilled chicken salad with two hard-boiled eggs, olive, avocado, cucumber, tomato, lettuce. And then at 1 o’clock I have a New York steak with green peppers. Then at 3:30 I have grilled chicken with bok choy. Then at 5:30, 6 o’clock, I have a beautiful piece of halibut or a cod or sea bass. Some sort of white fish.»

In between all that exercising and eating, he also has scheduled «family time» at 11 AM and 5:30 PM, plus picking his kids up at school in the afternoon.

Deepwater Horizon (2016)

As noted earlier, while Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg’s recent films (notably the dire Mile 22 and the lackluster Spenser Confidential) don’t match their previous hits, they followed the success of Lone Survivor with arguably their best movie together yet: 2016’s Deepwater Horizon. A thrilling retelling of 2010’s BP oil spill, anchored by another commanding turn from Wahlberg as Mike Williams, the Chief Electronics Technician who does everything he can to save his crew members when disaster strikes, Berg’s proven talent for grippingly grounded action sequences with unabashedly theatrical dramatic beats work tremendously in his favor, producing an engaging, impacting look at heroism and courage. It carries similar flaws in addition to similar strengths from Lone Survivor but is better served by Berg’s even more confident, commanding directing style, which was unfortunately lost in the two most recent movies he made with Wahlberg.

‘All the Money in the World’

That year, Wahlberg also starred in All the Money in the World, a film about billionaire J. Paul Getty that sparked nearly as much background drama as the amount that transpired on screen. After co-star Kevin Spacey was fired from the project in November over sexual harassment allegations, director Ridley Scott assembled Wahlberg, Michelle Williams and the rest of the cast and crew for an 11th hour reshoot, with Christopher Plummer taking over as Getty.

Scott successfully pulled everything together, but the accomplishment was soon eclipsed by the news that while Williams received a per-diem rate for the reshoot, Wahlberg took home another $1.5 million for his participation. Although the terms of his contract allowed him to do so, the outcry was such that Wahlberg announced he was donating the $1.5 million to the newly established Times Up Legal Defense Fund, with William Morris Endeavor — the talent agency that represents both actors — contributing another $500,000.

In the summer of 2018 Wahlberg starred in the American-Chinese action film Mile 22, which tells the story of a special CIA force tasked to protect a valuable intelligence asset from a group of terrorists.

He also starred in the 2018 comedy Instant Family.

I Heart Huckabees (2004)

Admittedly, I Heart Huckabees isn’t everyone’s deal. It’s sometimes seen as too twee, too cutesy, too beholden to the quirky indie movie cliches of the early ’00s. That’s understandable, to a certain respect, but that’s also overlooking how smartly it’s executed, how stylish it can be, and how much it’s elevated by its all-star ensemble, which includes Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Jason Schwartzman, Isabelle Huppert, and Mark Wahlberg. In their second collaboration together, Wahlberg turns in one of his funniest performances to date as Tommy Corn, a firefighter with an acute outlook on life. Made to seem like a ’30s screwball comedy under the formal stylings of movies from two decades prior, it might be seen as pretentious and too cutesy. However, if you like this sort of off-beat, off-kilter high-minded comedy, there is a lot to like — notably from Wahlberg’s supporting role.

Three Kings (1999)

Centered around four soldiers on a quest for gold in 1991, towards the end of the Gulf War, Mark Wahlberg made his first movie with his long-time collaborator David O. Russell in the 1999 war movie, Three Kings. In a cast that also includes George Clooney, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (in a rare acting turn), the movie once again combines comedy, drama, and action in a palpable, engaging way that we tend to expect from the talented Russell. While the filmmaker has a reputation for his behavior on set, notably it’s clear that he can often bring out the best in his performers, and that’s notably the case with Wahlberg. Among the three collaborations they made together, Three Kings remains one of their finest.

A few years before the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Three Kings critiqued American exceptionalism by updating The Treasure of the Sierra Madre for the Gulf War. Wahlberg, Clooney, and Ice Cube play U.S. soldiers on a quest for treasure who grow a conscience along the way. To be sure, this isn’t a heroic portrait of our men in uniform — rather, it’s a tale of self-interest and blinkered worldviews — and the three actors (as well as co-star Spike Jonze) form an unlikely band of brothers who want to find this gold so that they can feel their trip into the desert was worth it. Wahlberg would later sign up for a lot of rah-rah military films, but Three Kings sure isn’t that.

3. Christian Bale (The Fighter)

Wahlberg, who starred in and produced this true-life tale of boxer Micky Ward, had a hard time getting actors to commit to the role of Dicky Eklund, the drug-addicted fighter who is always in Ward’s corner. But then he thought about Christian Bale, whose daughter went to the same school as his: “I approached him in the playground … and said, ‘Dude, I have this movie, and I want you to read it.’” Their characters are half-brothers, and you feel that tight bond between the actors, with Bale providing an intensity and tough love that Ward needs as he takes his shot at the title. Mentor, friend, cautionary tale: Eklund is everything to Ward, making The Fighter a kind of love story between two men who feel comfortable only inside the ring.

Early Life

Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born on June 5, 1971, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Wahlberg grew up the youngest of nine children in a working-class family. His parents divorced when he was 11, and Wahlberg’s mother later blamed her own emotional neglect for her youngest son’s descent into juvenile delinquency during the next several years.

At 14 Wahlberg dropped out of school and began making his living on the streets — hustling, stealing and selling drugs. Two years later, he hit rock bottom when he was jailed for his role in the savage beating of a Vietnamese man. His 45-day stint in prison was a self-proclaimed turning point for the 16-year-old; vowing to turn his life around, he also devoted himself to bodybuilding, chiseling his body into impressive form.
