Music as Medicine — particularly…

Daphne Bryan

Music can play an important part in our lives yet how many of us appreciate the effect it has on our brains, bodies and moods, or understand how we can use music as a medicine? Music has the power to reduce everyday symptoms, such as stress, insomnia, pain, depression, and even snoring, as well as helping challenges found in neurological conditions such as freezing and gait problems, and difficulties with voice and swallowing. With modern advances in technology, scientists are now able to measure the precise effect of music on body and brain. Music as Medicine presents many research studies which have examined the effect of music on various conditions, and offers clear suggestions as to how readers can use music to reduce various symptoms, whether a person thinks themselves musical or not. It covers three aspects of musical involvement: listening to music, moving to music and making music. Daphne Bryan, PhD, takes a special look at the benefits of music for neurological conditions, Parkinson's in particular. Music stimulates many areas of the brain and in the case of damaged brains, it can activate alternative pathways to act in the place of damaged ones. Many of the symptoms discussed are also experienced by people with other diagnoses and by those who are otherwise fit and healthy so this book contains much that is relevant to all.

his shortcut of audience manipulation proved so successful that it would again be used in two subsequent pictures in the genre: Abel Ferrara’s MS. 45 (1981) and Meir Zarchi’s I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978). Ferrara’s film sports a remarkably similar protagonist, the mute Thana (played by the late Zoe Tamerlis), used for largely the same effect. Although she has no malady similar to Ferrara’s or Vibenius’ leads, her naпve disposition performs the same task: building the audience’s sympathy, only to tear it down in the rape sequences. —Stephen Gladwin via http://pages.cthome.net/puppylove/thriller.html

The Mediatization of the OJ…

Tatjana Neubauer

F. Scott Fitzgerald once said: »Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy.« In the 1990s, nobody fell deeper than O.J. Simpson. Once considered a national treasure, the athlete was accused of brutally slaying his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman on June 12, 1994. Within days, the media and public developed an unprecedented obsession with the story, turning a murder investigation and trial into a sensationalized reality show. Tatjana Neubauer examines the mediatization, deliberate manipulation, and the simplification of popular criminal trials for profit on television. She demonstrates that TV conflated legal proceedings into entertainment programming by commodifying events, people, and places.

Hannie Caulder (1971)

description

In some cases, the woman is killed at the end of the first act and the vengeance is carried out by her family. The Jungfrauenquelle (Jungfrukällan) is a particularly noteworthy film, considered the first film of its genre, by acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman . In exceptional cases , such as the film Open Season — hunting season , the perpetrator not only avenges a person he knows, but also eliminates the rapist for the common good.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the genre experienced its first major boom, triggered by the successes of Who Sows Violence (1971) and When You Die Everyone Is First (1972). In Everyone’s First To Die varies the subject by raping a man.

In 2006, Rogue Pictures signed a deal with Wes Craven to remake The Last House on the Left. That film had been one of the most influential horror films of the 1970s. In 2010 the controversial film I Spit on Your Grave came out. It was produced by CineTel Films and published worldwide.

In Gaspar Noé’s film Irréversible (2002), the classic structure was dissolved, with the first act being devoted to the representation of revenge and only the tracing back showing the events that led to this point. Roger Ebert argued that the film could therefore not be considered an exploitation film , as there would be no exploitation of the topic.

The genre has caught the attention of film critics. Much of this critical attention comes from feminist critics who examine the complex politics in the genre and its implications for cinema in general. In the book Rape-Revenge Films: A Critical Study by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, an analysis of the rape-and-revenge films was carried out and published. The book opposes a simplistic use of the term rape-revenge, as some films often seriously deal with the question of the morality of vengeance. In the movie Sleepers, for example, rape (exceptionally of men) is more of a secondary issue. Social conditions, friendship and loyalty frame the story of revenge here. The same goes for the films Dirty Harry Comes Back and For A Few Dollars More .

In addition to US and French films, Japan (e.g. Takashi Ishiis Freeze Me ), Finland, Russia, Argentina (e.g. I’ll Never Die Alone (2008)) and Norway (e.g. The Whore (2009)) produced rape-and-revenge films.

Revenge: A Love Story (2010)

The New Avengers: Feminism, Femininity and the Rape-Revenge Cycle (2000) — Jacinda Read

The New Avengers: Feminism, Femininity and the Rape-Revenge Cycle (2000) — Jacinda Read

About the Book
In this, the first full-length study of the rape-revenge film, Jacinda Read suggests that the rape-revenge cycle can be read as one of the primary ways in which Hollywood has attempted to make sense of feminism and the changing shape of heterosexual femininity in the post-1970 period. Arguing that rape-revenge is better understood not as a genre, but as a narrative structure, the author analyses the ways in which various deployments of this structure rework the ‘mass cultural fictions of femininity’ inscribed in the genres over which they have been mapped. From the ‘frontier femmes’ of rape-revenge westerns such as Hannie Caulder, through the ‘erotic avengers’ of neo-noirs such as Batman Returns, to the ‘maternal avengers’ of rape-revenge melodramas such as Eye for an Eye, The New Avengers explores the popular understandings of feminism that circulate around these generic manifestations of the female avenger. Applying ideas from feminist cultural studies to the analysis of film, and combining detailed textual analysis with contextual analysis, The New Avengers challenges many of the received orthodoxies of feminist theory and takes feminist film criticism and indeed, feminism itself, into the next generation. Interdisciplinary in its approach, The New Avengers will be of interest to second and third year undergraduates, postgraduates and lecturers across several academic fields including film studies, gender studies, and media and cultural studies.

About the Author(s)
Jacinda Read is Lecturer in Media Studies at De Montfort University.

Lady Snowblood (1971)
