Your Name is brought down by how Taki receives far less development than Mitsuha and how undeveloped their relationship is, but they’re both endearing enough to sell them as a couple, and it makes their getting together nothing but satisfying, especially with what Shinkai was known for at the time. Your mileage may vary on how well the film delivers on the thesis. It’s glacially paced, marked by (intentionally) adolescent internal monologues and extended sequences of trains stuck in the snow. Its balance of yearning to action, of discouragement to catharsis, often feels off, especially compared to his more dynamic efforts. But the animation is undeniably breathtaking, with extreme, heavily photo-referenced detail that would come to define his style.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days takes place in a Japan that has been split in half by Soviet occupation of Hokkaido in Japan’s north.
Two boys and a girl live close to the border and become fascinated by a giant tower built on the Soviet side.
The three of them promise to visit the tower one day, but when the girl mysteriously vanishes, the boys’ friendship grows distant. Years later, mysteries around the tower resurface which link to the girl’s disappearance.
Out of all of Shinkai’s major films, this is probably the least romantically inclined. However, it’s a fantastic example of Shinkai’s ability to wrap universal themes of friendship and love around a mind-bending (and almost psychedelic) science-fiction plot.

Weathering with You was particularly well received for its stunning visuals, especially the depiction of rain. While there are better narratives in Shinkai’s other films, this is still a cinematic treat.

3 Children Who Chase Lost Voices
Children Who Chase Lost Voices is very different from Makoto Shinkai’s usual work, and that works tremendously in its favor. While Shinkai typically deals with urban fantasy, Children Who Chase Lost Voices is a full-on fantasy story that takes clear inspiration from Studio Ghibli with its music, character design, monsters, and themes of nature and life. That can make the movie feel unoriginal, but Shinkai is able to create a story that stands out on its own with his signature character work creating a beautiful story about loss and loneliness. It’s not the kind of story Shinkai is known for, but it’s still worth watching, more than earning it a high rank.
7. Voices of a Distant Star (2002)
If you ever wondered what one guy armed with a Power Mac G4 and some consumer software could animate on his own, this 25-minute short film is the answer. Voices of a Distant Star springs from an exciting concept: A boy and girl text as she fights aliens in the outer reaches of the solar system, and because the expanse between them is so vast, almost a decade passes between their messages; he grows older on Earth, and she doesn’t. It’s an impressive, diverting episode-length film and is one of his most significant works, albeit undeniably also one of his least polished, suffering from ugly character designs, unfinished backgrounds, and a story that doesn’t go far beyond its premise. Still, Voices of a Distant Star showed promise and teed up the rest of his career, as he would return to its themes of star-crossed characters and communication failures over and over again.

2. Your Name (2016)
Shinkai’s breakthrough film with U.S. audiences is a riff on body-swapping for the Gen-Z era, with hints of teen romance and landscape-shattering cosmic peril thrown into the mix. It’s also Shinkai’s first feature where everything works in lockstep, from the visuals to the emo-rocking music by Radwimps to the emotional and joke-filled script. Chaos ensues when Taki, a city boy from Tokyo, starts swapping bodies with Mitsuha, a girl from the postcard-worthy Japanese countryside, but slowly, a bond forms as the two learn what’s going on and begin to communicate. The high jinks would be fun on their own, but the film gets really exciting once a mid-movie twist drops a more threatening wrench into Taki and Mitsuha’s lives. “Your Name is a kind of explainer for all those beautiful sunsets and meticulously re-created train stations and convenience stores,” Emily Yoshida wrote in Vulture’s review of the film. As she points out in that piece, the film refers to the Japanese concept of natsukashii — “a kind of inherent longing; the fond recollection of past places and days is tied to the realization that you can never recapture them.” If you watch only one Makoto Shinkai movie, it should probably be this one.

5 Centimeters per Second
5 Centimeters per Second (秒速5センチメートル) is looked on as one of the masterpieces of Makoto Shinkai early in his career. This anime movie, which was released in 2007, consists of three sections with the total runtime for about an hour : Cherry Blossom, Cosmonaut and 5 Centimeters per Second.
Those three parts center on a young boy Takaki and a main heroine Akari. They like each other when they are elementary school students but the situation is changing with the passage of time.
This anime represents the cruel but real “reality”. I really understand so well how they feels through the clear reality Makoto Shinkai presents.

Weathering with you
One of the best anime movies in 2019 is Weathering with You (天気の子), which some anime fans rate as better than Makoto Shinkai’s previous work Your Name. Weathering with You, the 7th anime movie of the director, earned more than the preceding anime at the domestic box office. It is being screened in about 140 countries and regions, which is also more than Your Name.
This story focuses on the high schooler Hodaka Morishima, who flies from his home in a remote island to Tokyo. He wanders hopelessly around the unfamiliar metropolis without both enough money and a job. At the center of Tokyo, he meets a girl named Hina Amano who is granted an extraordinary ability: she can make the weather sunny.
As the other Makoto Shinkai’s anime, many real life spots in Tokyo are depicted in this anime, and lots of fans travel those locations (check the list of anime locations for Weathering with You).
Finally, the Blu-ray and DVD will be released in Japan on the 27th May, 2020!

Weathering With You came out in 2019, and it earned US$ 193.8 million, which made it the highest-grossing Japanese film of the year. Weathering With You takes the viewers to present-day Tokyo, where a runaway high school student, Hodaka Morishima, tries to experience a new way of living.
Due to his age, Hodaka faces trouble finding a job. Luckily, he finds a job as a personal assistant for a local magazine. Hodaka’s new job causes him to run into a girl named Hina, who has the power to change the weather. The two become close friends, but disaster strikes when Hina disappears without a trace.

Flavors of Youth (詩季織々)
Flavors of Youth (詩季織々) is not the anime that is directed by Makoto Shinkai, but it looks like his movies because CoMix Wave Films, the same company as many Shinkai’s anime, produced it with the Chinese animation studio Haoliners Animation. The 3-episode anime movie is also worth watching as well as his anime listed above.
