WWE Debut and Champion

Cena captured the OVW heavyweight title in February 2002, then made his WWE debut that June when he signed up with the Smackdown roster. Just two years later, Cena took home the United States Championship, defeating The Big Show in March 2004 in Wrestlemania XX.

In the years since, Cena has notched many wins and titles. In 2007, he became the first wrestler to ever come up victorious against Edward «Umaga» Fatu.

Along the way, Cena, whose good looks and sculpted body inspired the nickname «The Marky Mark of Wrestling,» greatly increased his celebrity. Like Hogan, Cena proved that his showmanship in the ring translated to success in other venues.

Early Life

John Felix Anthony Cena was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts, the second of John Sr. and Carol Cena’s five boys.

At an early age, Cena showed a passion for sports and working out. By the time he was 15, he was a regular gym rat and after graduating high school, Cena headed off to Springfield College in Massachusetts to study exercise physiology and prove his worth on the football field. At Springfield, Cena turned himself into a Division III All-American offensive lineman and team captain.

In 2000, the new college graduate left Massachusetts despite his father’s wishes, seeking a new life in California as a bodybuilder. It wasn’t an easy transition for the 6-foot 1-inch aspiring star. He had just $500 in his pocket to make it across the country and get settled. To make ends meet, he folded towels and cleaned toilets at a Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach. Since he couldn’t afford an apartment, he shacked up in his 1991 Lincoln Continental.

John Joseph Cena or John Cena Sr. was born in Massachusetts in USA on June 16, 1944. He is of Italian descent and had worked in the pro wrestling industry before his son tore it apart. He worked as an announcer in Chaotic Wrestling and went by the name Johnny Fabulous. He has also served as a commissioner in East Coast Wrestling. Further, Cena Sr. has made multiple appearances in WWE, specially during the heated feud between his son John Cena and his arch nemesis Randy Orton.

Not much is known of John Cena’s mother Carol Cena. It is known that she was born in November 1947 and is of English and French-Canadian descent.

In 2005, Cena released his debut rap album titled «You Can’t See Me» after his debut catchphrase. The album contained the single «My Time Is Now» which has become his current entrance song and a popular meme on sites like Vine and Youtube in the form of Unexpected John Cena. The song, which was uploaded to Youtube on May 20, 2007, has received 3.7 million views (shown below, left) as of September 2015. On January 5th, 2007 a video titled «JOHN CENA RAP BATTLES A FAN» features a fan challenging Cena to a freestyle rap battle. As of September 2015, the video has gathered 3.1 million views (shown below, right). Cena is also known for challenging his in-ring opponents to rap battles.

Mo Deen Video

On July 2nd, 2019, a YouTuber named Mo Deen with 1,800 subscribers uploaded a video of himself filming John Cena without his permission (shown below, left). The video gained over 1119,500 views, 200 likes and 5,900 dislikes in two days. That same day Mo Deen uploaded the second video of himself continuing to film John Cena while Cena asks him to treat him with respect (shown below, right). The video garnered over 40,800 views and 2,700 dislikes in two days.

On July 3rd, 2019, John Cena tweeted, «Respect is reciprocal. You get what you give» (shown below). The tweet gained over 6,200 retweets and 23,100 likes in a day. The tweet was taken as a response to Mo Deen’s video.

That same day, Mo Deen uploaded another video in which he offers to wrestle John Cena, explains that he’s a good guy and attempts to explain that he wanted to warn Cena about Saudi bombs in Yemen (shown below). The video gained 23,400 views, 100 likes and 2,800 dislikes in a day.

Cena is a polarizing figure within the professional wrestling franchise. He is known for being a superhero and a good role model for kids, which means he doesn’t generally swear, cheat or otherwise be excessively violent in public. This makes him popular amongst children, but the behavior is divisive among adult wrestling fans who prefer the more violent and mature «Attitude Era» of WWE. He is also unpopular for his near-invincibility, winning almost every major match, even when his win is improbable or illogical.

Early Life

John Cena was born in 1977 on April 23rd in West Newbury, Massachusetts. John Joseph Cena and Carol Cena are the parents of John Cena while his siblings are Matt Cena, Dan Cena, Steve Cena, and Sean Cena. John’s mother is of English and French-Canadian lineage. His father has an Italian heredity and worked at Chaotic Wrestling as an in-ring announcer. John Cena is the second oldest son of his parents.

Regardless of his enormous success in wrestling, John Cena didn’t begin his career as an expert grappler. Cena was first admitted to Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was moved to the Cushing Academy, in Ashburnham, Massachusetts after some years. Later he went to Springfield College, Massachusetts, and turned into an NCAA Division III All-American center and skipper of their football squad. He graduated from there in 1998 with a degree in body movement and exercise physiology.

After graduation, Cena chose to make a profession out of bodybuilding while he likewise worked as a limousine driver. Cena worked in the Gold’s Gym store for $6 for 60 minutes. He started his wrestling training in 1999, at Ultimate University under Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) which was run by Rick Bassman.

John Cena portrayed the personality of a semi-robotic cyborg known as The Prototype. While training there he got highlighted in the Inside Pro Wrestling School, a Discovery Channel program. Promptly making success in the ring, Cena held the UPW Title for nearly a month. With his fame on the ascent, the World Wrestling Federation grabbed him up in 2001.

John Cena married Shay Sharietzadeh in October 2020. She is a Canadian engineer. The couple married again in July 2022 at the Rosewood Hotel in Georgina, Canada. According to John Cena’s co-star Keegan-Michael Key, Cena and Sharietzadeh met during the shooting of the movie Playing with Fire.

Before marrying Sharietzadeh, Cena was once married to Elizabeth Huberdeau. The two were married in 2009 and parted ways in 2012. Cena filed for the divorce on May 1st which was then finalized on July 18th. He then started dating fellow WWE Superstar Nikki Bella. The two became engaged on national television when Cena proposed to Bella at WrestleMania 33. However, they ended their relationship in 2018 and Cena finally met and married Sharietzadeh after that.

Foray into Wrestling

Cena’s turning point came in early 2000, during a casual conversation he had with a wrestler at Gold Gym’s who encouraged him to take classes at Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), a former World Wrestling Entertainment developmental company.

For Cena, the suggestion of making a go of it as a wrestler was not an entirely outlandish idea. His father, John Sr. (a.k.a. Johnny Fabulous), made a living as a wrestling announcer and businessman. As a kid growing up in suburban Massachusetts, the younger Cena spent many hours glued to the television set as he watched his wrestling heroes such as Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Shawn Michaels go at it in the ring.

As a wrestler himself, Cena’s ascension was rapid. Calling himself «The Prototype,» the ambitious Cena captured the UPW title on April 27, 2000, in San Diego, California. Over the course of the next year, Cena drew the attention of WWE executives, and in 2001, the young entertainer signed a developmental contract with the company to work at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).

Personal Life

Cena is currently engaged to Nikki Bella, a female wrestler also employed with WWE. He is a fan of Anime, and his favorite anime movie is Fist of the North Star. He also has fulfilled over 500 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the most by any celebrity in the history of the foundation.

Wrestlemania Proposal

At Wrestlemania 33, after he and Bella defeated The Miz and Maryse in a mixed-tag match, Cena was handed a microphone and proceeded to in the ring. The moment was compiled in Moments that evening.

Popular weatherman Al Roker was the guest announcer for the match. The following day, Cena and Bella appeared on The Today Show to talk about their engagement.

Nikki Bella Breakup

On April 15th 2018, Us Weekly reported that Cena and Nikki Bella had mutually agreed to break up, ending their much-publicized engagement. That day, Bella tweeted a statement confirming the split (shown below).

People Magazine reported that a source told them in the run-up to a planned May 5th wedding, Cena got «cold feet,» and felt as though he could not go through with the marriage. After the breakup, Cena posted some sad images on his Instagram page (shown below).

It was later rumored that Cena had been hooking up with fellow wrestler Carmella, but that was never confirmed. On May 12th, 2018, an image circulated online of John Cena with a patchy beard (shown below), which some fans took to mean he had ceased his intense grooming routine as a result of the breakup.

On May 14th, Cena appeared on The Today Show where he addressed the breakup. Cena told Kathy Lee and Hoda Kotb he «had his heart broken out of nowhere» and said:

This led to intense speculation that the entire breakup had been a «work,» or a fabricated publicity stunt, designed to generate attention for the May 20th, 2018 premiere of Total Bellas a reality show starring Bella, Cena, wrestler Daniel Bryan and his wife Brie Bella, Nikki Bella’s sister. Cageside Seats wrote that if that is the case, the «work» is very easy to see through.

Cena married his girlfriend, Elizabeth Huberdeau, in July 2009. In May 2012, Cena filed for divorce, allegedly shocking Huberdeau. Their messy separation played out in the media, but they eventually settled in July of that year.

In 2012, Cena began dating fellow WWE superstar Nikki Bella. On April 2, 2017, he proposed to Bella after they defeated The Miz and Maryse in a tag team match at Wrestlemania 33. Cena and Bella ended their engagement in April 2018, and briefly reconciled before it was reported that they had again gone their separate ways.

The following year, the wrestler turned actor began dating engineer Shay Shariatzadeh. The pair was married in October 2020.
