Shrek (2001)
The of Shrek is undeniable. It has become required viewing for all children of any age. It stays with people forever as anyone from 5 to 50 is likely to be able to quote it extensively… and probably does. Shrek is also the funniest Eddie Murphy has been since his streak of hits in the 1980s. The movie spawned , not to mention a couple of TV specials and amusement park rides, .
Starring Eddie Murphy as the voice “Donkey,” Shrek’s faithful sidekick, who loves boulders and supports Shrek even as Shrek barely tolerates Donkey at times. Murphy steals many a scene in the movie and delivers countless classic lines. Really, it’s one of the few times in Murphy’s later career that delivers as more . Part of what he lost when he stopped starring in rated R movies, he regained in Shrek, but without the dirty language.
‘Mulan,’ ‘Doctor Doolittle’ and ‘Bowfinger’
Despite the scandal in his personal life, Murphy went on to feature in a variety of family films. He provided the voice of Mushu the Lizard in Disney’s animated picture Mulan (1998) to enormous critical praise, and also starred alongside several animals in Doctor Doolittle (1998). In 1999, he headlined the comedy Bowfinger with Steve Martin, who also wrote the screenplay, and the following year, Murphy played all six lead characters in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. During this time, he also voiced superintendent Thurgood Stubbs on the animated show The PJs, for which he served as executive producer.
Harlem Nights (1989)
Eddie Murphy’s first (and only) time directing himself was in Harlem Nights, which completely was panned by the critics. Seriously, it took a beating. That isn’t a fair beating though. Harlem Nights is filled with hilarious performances by some of the biggest names in comedy history; names like Red Foxx, Della Reese, Arsenio Hall, Richard Pryor, and of course, Eddie Murphy himself.
The movie follows the gangster exploits of Quick Brown, Murphy’s character and his mentor and boss, Sugar Ray, played by Richard Pryor. It’s a period piece that actually looks great, with excellent costumes and sets. Most importantly, it’s really creatively funny. Harlem Nights is not as laugh out loud funny, maybe, than Murphy’s previous hits, but it still is really well done. And seriously, anyone that doesn’t laugh when Quick shoots off Vera’s pinky toe, might not have a sense of humor at all.
Wife, Children and Relationships
Murphy married Nicole Mitchell on March 18, 1993. They have five children together: Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola and Bella. The couple divorced on April 17, 2006. That year, Murphy began dating singer Melanie Brown of the Spice Girls. On April 3, 2007, Brown gave birth to a daughter, Angel, whom she said was Murphy’s child. Murphy questioned paternity, but a DNA test confirmed he was Angel’s father.
On New Year’s Day in 2008, Murphy married Tracey Edmonds, the former wife of Kenneth «Babyface» Edmonds, in Bora Bora. The private ceremony was not legally binding, and Murphy and Edmonds planned to repeat their vows on American soil. However, the couple released a statement that they had jointly decided against a legal ceremony.
In 2012, Murphy began dating Paige Butcher, and four years later, the couple had a daughter, Izzy. Shortly after the announcement of another pregnancy, Murphy and Butcher were engaged in September 2018. They had son Max in late November, giving Murphy a total of 10 children from his relationships.
In 2015, Murphy received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor which «recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain,» according to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which presents the award.

Boomerang (1992)
Boomerang marks the end of an era for Eddie Murphy. It was the end of his first run of huge hits that established him as star in the ’80s. He had successfully transitioned from TV to movies in the early ’80s, and by 1993, when Boomerang was released, he was at the height of his popularity. It also marks the end of the first era of Eddie Murphy’s career that started on SNL 13 years prior.
Boomerang, like Harlem Nights, is subtler than his early movies. The movie and Eddie Murphy himself are more polished and slicker, but the movie is completely hysterical. Supported by an outstanding cast, including the up and coming Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier, a very young Chris Rock and another up and coming actress name Halle Berry. Murphy shines (almost literally) as a wealthy man with commitment issues, serial dating woman after woman until Robin Givens’ character comes along and gives him a taste of his own medicine.
Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987)
On the opposite side of the Eddie Murphy spectrum from Shrek is Eddie Murphy: Raw. Raw is decidedly NOT family friendly, but it is a one-of-a-kind concert/standup film that is, without a doubt, some of the funniest 90 minutes of standup ever delivered. Raw was Eddie Murphy at the pinnacle of his comedic powers.
Sure, it’s insanely politically incorrect. Hell, it was politically incorrect in the ’80s when it was released in 1987; some of the jokes are downright offense today. But my God are they funny. How many standup acts are released as full-fledged theatrical releases? Not many, and that alone shows just how insanely popular Eddie Murphy was at the time. Not only was it good enough for theaters, it made over $51 million in 1987 dollars! For a comparison, another hit movie in 1987 was Robocop and it made about $53 million. $51 million for a standup concert movie is just crazy!
The Nutty Professor (1996)
After taking an almost three-year break from movie making, Eddie Murphy returned in The Nutty Professor and it immediately reestablished him as box office gold. The Nutty Professor was a huge hit with critics and audiences alike, and it completely altered the course of Eddie Murphy’s career, though maybe not for the better. Eddie Murphy stars as the grossly overweight Professor Sherman Klump, who develops a serum that shrinks him down and turns him into the obnoxious, but popular, Buddy Love. Jada Pinkett stars as his love interest and friend, and the rest of the roles in the movie are played by Murphy himself. Like 30 of them.
Well, okay, that’s being dramatic, but Eddie Murphy does play most of the Klump family, six different roles in total, for which he earned huge praise. It was not the first time he played multiple roles in the a movie, but The Nutty Professor is the one that would convince to do it more often. That choice would not always work as well as it did in The Nutty Professor.

Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
After starring with Dudley Moore in the bomb Best Defense in the summer of 1984, critics questioned if that brightly burning star from Trading Places had burned out. Well, by Christmas of that year, that question was answered with a resounded “no way!” with the release and massive success of Beverly Hills Cop. Part comedy and part action flick, Beverly Hills Cop took in an insane $316 million on a $15 million budget!
Beverly Hills Cop without a doubt established how huge a star Eddie Murphy had become because not only was it a huge hit, but the movie about a Detroit cop that goes to Beverly Hills to investigate his buddy’s murder in a classic fish out of water story is brilliant everywhere and Murphy’s performance is about as perfect as a performance in a comedy can get. It is absolutely brilliant and also spawned a bit of a franchise, with is possible.

QUOTES
- I’d like to produce, direct, write, score, and star in a film in exactly the way Chaplin did. I’ll do that before I’m 30.
- I’m relaxed about my career. I’ve been making movies for over 20 years, so I’ve earned at least the right to relax.
Mainstream Success, ‘SNL’ Cast Member
Responding to the pleas of his mother, Murphy enrolled at Nassau Community College after high school and worked part-time as a shoe store clerk. He continued to perform in local clubs and eventually worked his way into such New York City venues as the Comic Strip, billing himself as a disciple of the great comedian Richard Pryor.
Although his raunchy, profanity-ridden routines resembled his idol’s, Murphy stayed away from drinking, smoking and drugs, and would later declare to Barbara Walters, «I don’t have to sniff cocaine to make me funny.»
When Murphy learned that the producers of the popular late-night comedy show, Saturday Night Live, were seeking a Black cast member for the 1980-81 season, he jumped on the opportunity. He auditioned for the part six times, and finally earned a place as an extra on the show.
Murphy appeared sporadically throughout the season, until one fateful night when producers realized they had four minutes of airtime remaining and no material. They pushed Murphy before the camera and told him to do his stand-up routine. His improvised performance was called «masterful» by Rolling Stone, and Murphy became one of only two cast members (along with Joe Piscopo) asked to return for the next season.
Murphy became Saturday Night Live’ s strongest comedic presence, creating such memorable characters as Mister Robinson, an urban version of TV’s Mister Rogers; an older version of the Little Rascals character, Buckwheat; and an illiterate convict and poet named Tyrone Green. He also continued his skillful impersonations, adding Bill Cosby, Muhammad Ali, James Brown, Jerry Lewis and Stevie Wonder to his repertoire. Murphy received criticism for his satirical characterizations based on Black stereotypes. He defended his performances, claiming that his characters were far too absurd and abstract to be taken seriously.
Dreamgirls (2006)
Dreamgirls was a monster hit, winning all kinds of critical acclaim for the production and for Eddie Murphy himself. It was, in a way, a comeback for Murphy, because with the exception of the animated Shrek movies, Eddie Murphy had put together a string of pretty bad movies. Dreamgirls turned that streak around in a dramatic way.
Eddie Murphy won a Golden Globe for his role as Jimmy Early, a bawdy R&B singer whose career falls apart almost before it gets off the ground. Murphy was also nominated for an Oscar and received widespread acclaim for his performance, the first time that had happened in years. It was all very well deserved as Dreamgirls and Eddie Murphy’s performance in it are both excellent.
Eddie Murphy wasn’t always live on Saturday Night Live.
After enjoying success as a stand-up comedian, Murphy arrived on Saturday Night Live in 1980 at age 19, where he spent four seasons drawing renewed interest to the show that had once been declared “Saturday Night Dead” by critics following the departure of original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi; and series creator Lorne Michaels. By the time Murphy was ready to depart the show in 1984 to pursue feature films—1982’s 48 Hrs. and 1983’s Trading Places had been hits—SNL’s producers were so desperate to hold on to their star attraction that they Murphy a deal to essentially stick around for a portion of the 1983-1984 season. Murphy would appear live in studio in 10 of the 20 scheduled shows and tape 15 sketches that they could insert throughout the season.
“We basically just did a private show that was one Eddie sketch after another that we taped with a studio audience,” writer Pam Norris told Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller for their 2002 book, Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests. “And then those were later put into the shows.”
NAACP Image Awards.
Murphy almost had his own Saturday morning cartoon.
In 1987, at the height of Murphy’s powers in the entertainment industry, he was nearly granted one of the biggest honors of any performer: his own Saturday morning cartoon series. Murphy was reportedly in discussions with Hanna-Barbera for a series—the premise was never disclosed—that would presumably have offered a G-rated interpretation of his comic sensibilities.
The idea was not without precedent. One of Murphy’s comic inspirations, the similarly adult-oriented Richard Pryor, headlined Pryor’s Place, a children’s show that ran on CBS for one season beginning in 1984. The untitled Murphy production never saw the light of day, though Murphy did eventually find his way back in the Hanna-Barbera fold. He was set to voice the title character in Hong-Kong Phooey, a live-action and computer-animated adaptation of the ‘70s cartoon featuring a martial arts-proficient dog, in 2011. That project was also shelved.

Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop character almost met Crocodile Dundee.

Beverly Hills Cop was a gigantic hit, with its $235 million in ticket sales beating even Ghostbusters to become America’s highest grossing film of 1984. Murphy starred as Axel Foley, a Detroit police detective whose investigation of his friend’s murder leads him to a culture clash in Beverly Hills. The film spawned two sequels in 1987 and 1994. For the third installment, Paramount kicked around the idea of teaming Murphy’s Foley with Paul Hogan’s Crocodile Dundee character, the star of his own fish-out-of-water franchise. The idea was suggested by Brandon Tartikoff, Paramount’s then-president. Another idea would have Foley in London and working with a Scotland Yard inspector played by Sean Connery. The 1994 film ultimately featured Foley attempting to solve his boss’s murder and chasing a lead back to an amusement park in California.
