Why it’s Fresh: Critics enjoyed the narrow lens on not-so-privileged American youth in this indie flick, which not only served as a believable slice-of-life, but also as a critique of the Reagan administration. The Washington Post’s Rita Kempley said of Promised Land that «Gedrick and Pollan give character to the cliches with their heartfelt work, and Sutherland and the show-stealing Ryan bring depth and weight to a potentially tiresome pair.»

3 You’ve Got Mail

You’ve Got Mail was the third film co-starring Ryan and Hanks, and the second under the direction of Nora Ephron. This production, inspired by the play Parfumerie by Miklós László and its subsequent adaptations, narrates the story of Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox, two strangers involved in an online relationship without knowing that, in reality, they are rival business owners who hate each other. It gets even worse: Joe’s business threatens to put Kathleen’s family bookstore out of business. The You’ve Got Mail cast is rounded out by Parker Posey, Jean Stapleton, Dave Chappelle, Steve Zahn, Dabney Coleman, and Greg Kinnear.

Though some industry insiders may have been wary of a film about people in their 50s and 60s falling in love, audiences were ready for a mature romance—one that involved a hilarious sex scene in which Keaton’s character takes Nicholson’s blood pressure to make sure he doesn’t have a heart attack during the act. The film grossed over $266 million worldwide and nabbed Keaton an Oscar nomination. Why it’s Rotten: According to critics, there was potential here for the sparks to fly between leads David Duchovny (who stole hearts starring in X-Files) and Meg Ryan (the rom-com queen), but unfortunately, neither the stakes nor the swoons seem to take flight. The New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski opined in a 1/4-rated review that «Drab, grayscale shots of a man and woman sitting at the gate are not my idea of a good time, especially when underscored by David Boman’s sappy Hallmark movie music.»

If nothing else, the rom-com genre has given us the scene in which an ever-anxious Albert Brooks watches a near-angelic Meryl Streep slurp down a never-ending noodle. The pair’s chemistry as Daniel and Julia is on full display in Defending Your Life, a witty exploration of the afterlife written and directed by Brooks. In the film, the pair’s post-death fates are decided in Judgment City, where their actions (or inactions) on Earth are litigated. Unsurprisingly, meeting the love of your life in the place where you’re forced to defend your own is a bit of a drag. If Daniel can’t properly justify his way of living, he’ll be forced to do it all over again, leaving Julia behind. Why it’s Fresh: Critics agreed that it wasn’t the rom-com darling duo’s best, but Tom Hanks and Ryan still deliver the show stopping on-screen chemistry they do so well together in this kooky adult fairytale. Flavorwire’s Jason Bailey said of Joe Versus the Volcano: «It speaks to the commercial and critical success of Shanley’s 1987 hit Moonstruck that he was handed, by a major studio, the resources to make a movie as unapologetically weird as this one.»

14. The Princess Bride (1987)
As you wish. The utterance of those three words is all the evidence needed for why Rob Reiner’s adaptation of William Goldman’s novel is one of the best romantic comedies of all time. Cary Elwes loads them with chemistry when whispering as Westley to Robin Wright’s Buttercup. They later incite laughter and shock when chanted down a hill. And when said by the all-too-comforting Peter Falk in the film’s final moments, it’s nearly impossible to ward off the goosebumps. There are a whole bunch of other brilliant lines in between—from Wallace Shawn (“Inconceivable!”), Billy Crystal (“Have fun storming the castle!) and Mandy Patinkin (“Hello my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die”), among others. The movie built around them is why we’re still reciting all these decades later. —Savannah Walsh

CNN.com’s Carol Buckland wrote that «The main problem with this movie is that it wavers between touchy-feely sweetness and dark-hearted nastiness. Its indecisiveness of tone ends up undermining and unraveling the production.»

6 Addicted to Love

Inspired by the Robert Palmer song, 1997’s Addicted to Love delves into the boundaries of romantic obsession, featuring Ryan, Matthew Broderick, Tchéky Karyo, and Kelly Preston. Directed by Griffin Dunne, the film centers on Sam (Broderick), who lives happily with his girlfriend Linda (Preston), until she leaves him and moves to New York with a new lover. Determined to win her back, Sam relocates and starts monitoring his sweetheart and her new partner, Anton (Karyo), very closely. However, someone sneaks up on his surveillance operation: Maggie (Ryan), Anton’s ex-fiancée who is willing to go to any lengths in order to get revenge.
4. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
For anyone who’s ever found herself sitting at home with dangerous quantities of wine and cake, belting out “All by Myself” alone, this one was bound to be a home run—and apparently, quite a lot of us could relate. Renée Zellweger’s hapless heroine Bridget Jones and her competing love interests—played with distinctly British charm by Colin Firth and Hugh Grant—became an instant hit in 2001. Although the sequels never lived up to the promise of the original, it’s hard to think of anything that could erase the legacy of blue soup, ugly Christmas sweaters, and embarrassing fights in the street. Besides, it’s hard to think of a more satisfyingly absurd, distinctly “rom-com” climax than the moment Bridget chases Mr. Darcy down a snowy London street in nothing but a pair of sneakers, a jacket, and zebra-print undies. —Laura Bradley
1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
It launched the rom-com career of the singular Nora Ephron. It established Meg Ryan as America’s sweetheart. And it became the gold standard that Hollywood tried to emulate for the next decade. 1989’s When Harry Met Sally and all its talky, charming smartness felt revelatory upon its release, and still resonates today primarily because it so thoughtfully examines the central question posed at the beginning: can (straight) men and women really be just friends? While those stark gender lines, and Sally’s obsession with marriage, feel a bit dated in 2018, the film is still a near perfect execution of the genre. Ephron and director Rob Reiner achieve that alchemy by combining the sweet quirkiness of Ryan’s Sally Albright with the cranky pessimism of Billy Crystal’s Harry Burns, all swirled together with Ephron’s endlessly quotable dialogue (as well as more than a few memorable improvised lines): “Baby Fish Mouth is sweeping the nation!”; “Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash!” Of course, you also can’t forget the charming faux-documentary vignettes of longtime married couples sprinkled throughout the piece, and the stellar supporting performances by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. Re-watching the film today is a bleak reminder of all that on- and off-screen talent that is no longer here—but thankfully, Ephron’s intelligent wit, and those who sold it, will live on forever. “I’ll have what she’s having.” —Nicole Sperling

On air, his father gets vulnerable and shares his feelings, and a reporter all the way out in Baltimore falls for his words. Across the country from each other and unsure if their paths will ever cross, the reporter devises a plan to get the supposed man of her dreams to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day.
Why it’s Fresh: Critics were stunned by Sleepless in Seattle, finding it to be a testament to the power of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s ineffably perfect on-screen chemistry, given that they spend most of this film apart, but still manage to make the story swoon-worthy. «Sleepless in Seattle (citywide), a real charmer, is a romantic comedy about an ultimate long-distance relationship,» the Los Angeles Times’ Michael Wilmington wrote. «Emphasize ‘romantic.’ Emphasize ‘comedy.’ It delivers both.»

This Bringing Up Baby-esque slapstick comedy is made picture-perfect thanks to the onscreen trifecta of Barbra Streisand as freewheeling college dropout Judy Maxwell, Ryan O’Neal as uptight musicologist Dr. Howard Bannister, and Madeline Kahn in her first onscreen role as Howard’s shrill fiancée Eunice Burns. Their performances soar under the direction of Peter Bogdonavich, working from a quick-witted script by Graduate cowriter Buck Henry and Bonnie and Clyde cowriters David Newman and Robert Benton. The enduring legacy of Doc remains its comedic set pieces, including an elaborate car chase through the hills of San Francisco and a sequence in which Howard pretends not to know Eunice in a restaurant while hiding beneath a table with Judy. Why it’s Fresh: Critics praised When a Man Loves a Woman’s deft portrayal of alcoholism and the realistic effects it has on both the addict and their family. «This beautifully acted, emotionally fraught film… unfolds in ways that are all too familiar to TV-movie addicts,» the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Eleanor Ringel Cater wrote. «At the same time, it benefits from achingly well-observed star performances that don’t beg for sympathy or succumb to clichés.»

Hogan’s film, Dermot Mulroney is the perfect soft surface for Roberts to throw darts at, while Cameron Diaz is hateable and relatable in a committed performance that solidified her star. But it’s Rupert Everett, playing one of the early rom-com gay besties, who nearly saunters off with the movie. When he and Roberts are a’banter, My Best Friend’s Wedding makes its most salient observation: sometimes it’s friendship, not romance, that rescues us—and redeems us, too. —Richard Lawson

19. The Wedding Banquet (1993)
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee is typically lauded for his visual prowess, thanks to lush films like Life of Pi and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But he’s sneakily one of the best directors of romance as well (see: 1995’s Sense and Sensibility and 2005’s Brokeback Mountain). That brings us to an Oscar-nominated rom-com from earlier in Lee’s filmography, which centers on a closeted Taiwanese man in a long-term relationship who agrees to an arranged marriage with a woman in order to satisfy his traditional parents. An already thorny situation is further complicated when the bride-to-be reveals the secret she hopes to protect with their union. 21. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
There would be no You’ve Got Mail without Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner, which inspired both Kathleen Kelly’s Upper West Side bookstore and the 1998 film’s central structure. In Shop, our two leads aren’t warring business competitors, but instead a pair of squabbling salesclerks in a Budapest department store who don’t know they’re secret pen pals. Set during the holiday season, this film often gets short shrift as the second best Christmas movie starring James Stewart. But the understated charms of Shop are not to be ignored. Margaret Sullivan’s Klara is a worthy sparring partner for Stewart’s Alfred. Fresh off his turn as the titular role in The Wizard of Oz, Frank Morgan delivers a scene-stealing turn as store boss Hugo Matuschek. Why it’s Fresh: Critics loved how When Harry Met Sally redefined the usual rom-com formula, opting to go for a wittier, more provocative narrative, rather than dumbing things down, and not sacrificing any of the jokes or the steaminess in the process. Little White Lies’ Glenn Heath Jr. called it «Cynically lovely and a whip smart archetype for the modern rom-com.»

Вероятно, воодушевленные успехом «Неспящих в Сиэттле», создатели этой картины решили 5 лет спустя опять собрать вместе звездный дуэт Тома Хэнкса и Мег Райан. Лучше, чем в 93-м не получилось, но добродушная и незатейливая романтическая комедия, бесспорно, получилась удачной. По-идее, это должно быть скучное кино. Но игра актеров, теплая атмосфера и какие-то забавные мелочи и шутки создают отличное настроение, которое позволяет смело рекомендовать фильм «Вам письмо» к просмотру.

Сложно найти человека, который бы не слышал об этом фильме. Отличная, добрая мелодрама. «Неспящих» можно смело отнести к категории семейных фильмов, где все пристойно и светло, как на детском утреннике: чувства после просмотра соответствующие. Никого не удивишь американским фильмом о любви с хэппи эндом. Но не много фильмов могут преподнести такую историю настолько честно и искренне, что никто не может удержаться, чтобы не поверить Тому Хэнксу и Мег. К слову, кинокритики встретили этот фильм более радушно, чем «Город ангелов».

Angela Bassett stars as a woman in search of her next great adventure, coerced into a tropical getaway by her best friend Delilah (a perfectly cast Whoopi Goldberg), and swept off her feet by Taye Diggs, a younger island local who urges her to set fear about their (retrospectively pretty tame) age gap aside. What follows is a fun, sexy, proto-Eat Pray Love-style romp that still manages to pack an emotional punch. In this animated film, two con artists plan to deceive a mourning Grand Duchess by passing off a random orphan girl as her granddaughter, the missing Romanov princess, Anastasia. While in Paris to deliver the girl and reap their reward, all three discover that perhaps this isn’t an elaborate scheme at all.
Why it’s Fresh: Anastasia was a knockout right out the gate for Fox’s fledgling animation studio, and critics were mesmerized by not only its artistry, but also its infectious songs, its spin on Russian history, and the two love stories at the heart of it all. USA Today’s Susan Wloszcyna said of Anastasia: «Flawed but not fatally, this ambitious epic’s strength lies not just with its haunting melodies, pretty pictures, star voices and kid-friendly sidekicks… What gives Anastasia its edge is that most elusive of ingredients, an emotionally gripping script.»

Why it’s Rotten: Critics were largely rolling their eyes at City of Angels’ premise, finding its multitude of tear-jerking and heartstring-tugging moments more forced than endearing. The Observer’s Andrew Sarris described City of Angels as a film that «Strains to achieve the enchantingly sublime, but ends up sinking to the depressingly ridiculous.»
