<!— >

Thanks to the likes of K-ON, musical anime hold a decently popular spot in the larger anime landscape. However, few anime are as truly in love with music as Carole and Tuesday. From the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, C&T is a sci-fi series in which humans have colonized Mars, and AI-produced music has taken over the industry. Carole and Tuesday are dedicated to making their own original music despite this, leading to a beautiful journey to prove the value of the human touch in the arts. The series is full of amazing songs, and eccentric characters, with plentiful homages to real-life musical acts and songs.

The Promised Neverland

Image: Cloverworks/Aniplex of America

This series starts out in an idyllic orphanage before the children living there discover that they’re entire reality is a lie. From there the series is suddenly transformed into one of the scariest and most thrilling anime of the decade. It’s rare that horror is done well in anime, but Promised Neverland’s nightmare world feels like it’s resting at a constant simmer, always threatening to boil over into absolute terror.

Combating the world’s constant nightmares are Promised Neverland’s four main characters who each prove to be charming, clever, and resourceful, and each have their own role to play in the season-long plan for escape. When the brilliantly plotted season finally comes to a close, it’s one of the most satisfying endings of any anime season. —AG

My Hero Academia (2016-Present)

Widespread superheroism has become the norm following the emergence of superpowers, or «Quirks», among the majority of the planet’s populace. Izuku «Deku» Midoriya, a superhero enthusiast, is one of the few without a Quirk who nevertheless dreams of being a hero. When Deku’s idol, the best of the best, bequeaths his power to the boy after seeing his worthiness, the now budding superhero enrolls in a prestigious school to train new generations of costumed champions.

With the massive popularity of superheroes at the moment, it is not surprising that My Hero Academia has been so warmly received. However, the anime would be able to stand on its own merits regardless, as it has wonderful characters, heart-pounding action, and a genuine love for its influences while still offering insightful exploration of the realistic implications of its premise. Become a fan of this show now on Funimation.

1 Bakuman (2010)

Ever wondered what it took to become a mangaka? In Bakuman, the creative duo of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata (the same guys behind Death Note) explores the trials and tribulations of the artist-writer duo Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi in their journey to become a world-famous mangaka. Originally a manga, their entire adventure from junior high to adulthood spanned a thrilling 75-episode anime that’s incredibly inspirational.

What’s perhaps compelling about Bakuman is its sheer ability to inspire and motivate audiences to pursue their dreams. From joining competitions, fighting editors, to struggling against deadlines the show comes the many trials aspiring mangakas experience. Bakuman is definitely the anime to watch for anyone who wants to pursue a dream.

1/10 Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012)

Yowamushi Pedal

TMS Entertainment/Discotek Media

Sakamichi Onoda is an anime nerd who joins the biking club after realizing that he’s got the skill for it. (He had been biking all the way to Akihabara on his casual bike to pick up anime goods!) From there he meets the rest of the Sohoku High School biking team and helps them try to win the Inter-High tournament.

While Yowamushi Pedal is your typical sports anime, the series does a great job explaining the roles on a biking team in a digestible way. It’s not one of those series where characters are already experts of their sport and are explaining things to teammates who know the concepts already, for some reason. You’re learning with Onoda. —JL

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

David Production/Viz Media

You know that thing you did as a kid when your friend would shoot their finger guns at you, but you’d say you were made out of metal, and then they say that their bullets are made out of metal-melting acid, but then you say that last night you snuck into their base and ate all their bullets? JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is exactly like that, except instead of imaginative kids, everyone is an extremely beautiful fully grown adult man with a name like “Robert E.O. Speedwagon” or “Kars.”

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is pure spectacle. It’s a series built around absurd confrontations where the stakes aren’t always clear and the rules might as well not exist, but it’s a joy to look at. Characters strut around in avante-garde, impractical outfits and strike dramatic poses. They’re all named (seemingly arbitrarily) after classic rock musicians. It’s the kind of series that encourages you to keep watching, not with a compelling plot or great mystery, but just with the promise of seeing beautiful and weird men do things.

I think that’s okay. —Patrick Gill

KonoSuba (2016-Present)

Reclusive teenager Kazuma Sato dies unexpectedly (and embarrassingly), after which he is given the choice to reincarnate in an RPG-inspired world full of fantasy and adventure. Being a video game and anime fanboy, he agrees, but comes to periodically question his decision when he ends up stuck with hopeless companions comprised of the narcissistic goddess who facilitated his rebirth, an explosion-obsessed sorceress, and a female crusader with frightening masochistic tendencies.

Not the most grandiose or dignified anime, but then, it is not trying to be. KonoSuba wholeheartedly embraces the absurd, and does so with intelligence. The love-hate dynamic shared between Kazuma and his party members is both hilarious and endearing. Sign up to get lost in madcap quests with this show on Crunchyroll.

5 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba (2019)

After seeing demons slaughter his family and transform his sister into a demon, Tanjiro Kamado aspires to become a demon slayer himself. Despite this simple premise, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba rises to become one of the most compelling anime series of the decade. Set in Taisho-era Japan, Demon Slayer chronicles Tanjiro’s training as a demon slayer while finding a cure for his sister, Nezuko.

However, things aren’t always as they seem. Demons are always on the prowl, and Tanjiro needs to use Breathing Styles — special combat techniques — to prevent them from causing more harm to the populace. Anyone who wants a series like Devil May Cry set in historic Japan will appreciate Demon Slayer.

Carole and Tuesday

Image: Bones/Netflix

Carole and Tuesday is a show about two very different girls who have both run off to the big city in search of realizing their musical dreams. While neither one finds it on her own, their friendship blossoms into a creative collaboration that allows them to push each other to new musical heights.

The show’s gorgeous animation, beautiful music, and heartfelt central friendship would be enough to make it one of the best anime of the decade. But the fact that it’s set on Mars in a fully realized future always adds a little extra to the characters rather than distracting from them. —AG

3/10 Hunter x Hunter (2011)

<!— >

Hunter x Hunter already had an anime adaptation in the early 2000s, but many fans are far more familiar with the 2011 adaptation, and for good reason. While the older series isn’t bad by any means, HxH (2011) gave the series a modern aesthetic that continues to define it to this day. Its intro ‘Departure’ is one of those anime OPs that will spark a chorus of joy in only a few notes, and that level of quality permeates the rest of the series. Not to mention, that this version of the anime adapts far more of the original story, and will likely continue once more chapters are available, or the series concludes.

6 Terror In Resonance (2014)

What happens when two teenage boys threaten to blow up Tokyo with a prototype atomic bomb? Terror in Resonance is exactly this with two boys Nine and Twelve promising to not detonate the bomb only if someone can solve their cryptic riddle. Apparently, Nine and Twelve are survivors of a tragic experiment designed to create human weapons all with Savant syndrome. In turn, the two boys use their extraordinary gifts to expose the secret experiment and the organization behind it.

Despite its short 11-episode run, Terror in Resonance earned praise on two fronts. First, its thriller plot definitely strikes an immediate interest. Second, its approach to aesthetics and its look into modern society as a whole makes it an interesting watch today.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (2011)

Jintan Yadomi, a teenage hermit, is somehow able to perceive the ghost of his childhood friend Menma. Together with four other kids, they used to be an inseparable group until Menma died. Eventually deciding that they are meant to aid her transition into the afterlife, Jintan reunites with their former comrades to uncover and realize Menma’s mysterious final wish so that she can move on.

A simple yet deeply moving coming-of-age tale, Anohana takes viewers on a trip through springtime friendship, tragedy, unresolved feelings, and adolescent angst. Laugh, cry, rekindle tender memories, and cry some more with this series on Funimation.

2/10 Attack On Titan (2013)

<!— >

Just like OPM, Attack on Titan was an unexpected hit that took the anime world by storm and brought a huge injection of new anime fans to the community. Eren and friends’ quest to free themselves of the monstrous titans went missing for four years after the original season, but the fact that fans were willing to wait shows just how big the series already was. WIT, the original studio behind AOT pumped out some legendary animation that still gets praised today, and a soundtrack from Hiroyuki Sawano elevates the action even higher. Add to that the already compelling drama from the manga, and it’s no wonder fans still show up for AOT whenever a new season drops.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019-Present)

Kindly Tanjiro Kamado returns home one day to find his family brutally slaughtered, except for his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a man-eating demon, though she manages to resist devouring her brother. The young Kamado siblings then embark on a journey to somehow cure Nezuko and destroy Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King who butchered their loved ones. To do so, they make many faithful allies and Tanjiro learns to become a sword-wielding Demon Slayer.

Few modern shounen anime can arguably match Demon Slayer’s electrifying action sequences, which the show continuously refines by, among other things, sparing no effort in the animation department. And when the series is not dazzling you with its fights, its characters are cracking you up or breaking your hearts. Experience this marvel on Funimation.

2 Violet Evergarden (2018)

After a tragic war that befell humanity, Violet Evergarden — an Auto Memory Doll, or a ghostwriter — embarks on a journey to reintegrate into society after serving as a soldier. However, Violet’s adventures as a ghostwriter slowly introduce her to people from all walks of life. In this process, she hopes she eventually manages to find her life’s true purpose.

Despite this rather simple premise, Violet Evergardenimmediately captures one’s attention due to its compelling narrative. While Violet’s interactions with people differ from each tale, they each have a perspective to show and a life to present. This is quite an interesting take on exploring the many views and lives people live.

7/10 Dororo (2019)

<!— >

The original Dororo manga was released in 1967 by legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka. It began in a completely different entertainment landscape, so managing to adapt it into a not just coherent, but masterful and emotional anime, is no small feat. Dororo’s protagonist Hyakkimaru had his limbs and organs stolen from him as a baby and now uses a prosthetic body to hunt down the demons to whom his father sold his body. His adventure with the young Dororo leads to a friendship that must survive not only a daily deluge of demons but the complex and often heartbreaking family drama the series portrays.

15 Fate/Zero (2011-2012)

Fans of the Fate series know there’s more to the Holy Grail War than a battle royale for a simple wish. During its release in 2007, the Fate/Zero light novel series finally expanded upon the tragic past of Emiya Kiritsugu, the idolized father figure of Fate/stay night protagonist Emiya Shirou, and his larger involvement in the Fuyuki Holy Grail War.

Penned by Gen Urobuchi, Fate/Zero boasts a much grimmer tone than the modern dark fantasy of the original Fate/stay night game. However, what perhaps makes Fate/Zero such a standout series was Ufotable’s take on stellar graphics and animation that did well to complement its already impressive narrative. Seeing the origins of the likes of Artoria Pendragon and Gilgamesh, as well as the deeper politicking involved in the Holy Grail War, makes Fate/Zero quite a delightfully dark tale to rewatch.

Attack On Titan (2013-Present)

Image via Crunchyroll

Horrific behemoths called Titans have taken the Earth. Walled cities now house the last vestiges of the human race. A young man named Eren Yeager survives a Titan attack on his hometown that claims his mother’s life. Swearing vengeance, he enlists in the Survey Corps, humanity’s specialized task force for fighting the beasts, and learns that he has the strange ability to transform into a Titan himself, which gives him an edge against them, but also leads him down a path of dark revelations.

Dystopia junkies are not short of products to consume, yet Attack on Titan has managed to stand out among the best of today’s fare. Grim, gut-wrenching, intriguing, unflinchingly violent, and absolutely gorgeous to look at, this show will be missed immensely when its finale comes around. Get caught up on Hulu.

11 One-Punch Man (2015-2019)

Albeit with an ongoing manga, One-Punch Man did receive a short stint for an anime adaptation, and it’s been quite the hilarious adventure to behold. The anime loosely follows the plot of the first part of the manga, where Saitama of City Z is arguably the strongest superhero in the world but is equally collectively ignored by the masses. At its core, Saitama has comically trained himself to the point where most threats — even extra-powerful aliens — get decimated with a single one of his punches.

And while he’s effectively OP, Saitama and One-Punch Manstill manage to provide audiences with quite the pleasant experience. Anime fans who want a series that parodies most superhero trends will love the approach of One-Punch Man.

Yuri!!! on Ice

Mappa/Crunchyroll

First off, the theme song for Yuri!!! On Ice absolutely slaps and will get stuck in your head. The show itself is full of amazing music, incorporated into the main characters’ ice skating routines.

At its heart, Yuri!!! On Ice is a love story: anxiety-ridden Yuri falls for his suave coach Viktor, as the two train for the Grand Prix. Viktor and Yuri’s love story and the ice skating competition take up the main plot, but the colorful side characters make this show unforgettable. Who else loves King JJ and the dance routine that’s literally just set to a song about how great he is? Plus angry Yurio and the great love he has for his grandfather? And Otabek and Pichit rising up to represent their countries for the first time? It’s all a delight — and you learn a hella lot about ice skating in between. —Petrana Radulovic

Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Image: A-1 PIctures/Aniplex of America

Romance anime series aren’t often hilarious, and they’re rarely well animated. Kaguya Wants to be Confessed is both. The series pits two geniuses up against each other in the adorable duel of trying to get the other to confess.

The last few years of the decade have been filled with romantic comedy anime. But Kaguya manages to synthesize the best parts of those series into something that feels different. As each one has their ridiculous internal monologues the show shifts into their minds and shows off with the kind of visual flourishes normally reserved for action anime. Kaguya’s still a romantic comedy at its heart, but there’s nothing else in the genre that looks this good or is half as funny. —AG

Ping Pong The Animation

Tatsunoko Production/Funimation

No show has ever looked like Ping Pong The Animation. From the creator of The Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong is full of misshapen lines, inconsistent proportions, and downright strange looking faces. But the way the show stretches moments of reflex reaction and Ping Pong-mastery into beautiful scenes that anyone can understand is incredible.

Most sports anime focus on what it means for an individual to join a team, but Ping Pong dives into its character’s psyche through the lens of individual sports. It’s obsessed with the parts of our personalities that make us who we are and the parts that keep us from succeeding, at ping pong or anything else. —AG

Detective Conan Movie 14: The Lost Ship in the Sky

MAL Rated 8.29, Ranked #229

Detective Conan is a long-running franchise which is part of the shounen staple that we’ve come to enjoy over the years. And it’s easy to see why it’s so well-received. Seeing the young but incredibly smart boy detective, Conan Edogawa, solve case after case is inspiring stuff!
There’s also been a ton of movie releases which are all worth watching. 2010’s theatrical release focuses on a hijacked airship, which is a great, claustrophobic setting for all the Conan-esque action and mystery to unfold.
Will Conan be able to foil the plan of the terrorist group behind the hijacking? And more importantly, how will he deal with Kaito Kuroba when they cross paths?

4 Food Wars! — Shougeki No Soma (2015)

No one can deny good food especially if it comes with over-the-top anime reactions. In Food Wars, delectable food once again becomes the highlight of a series. Set in Tokyo’s Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, Soma Yukihara enrolls in the school in the hopes of surpassing his father’s culinary skills. On his journey, there are various trials and tribulations as well as other rivals that constantly test his cooking skills.

Fans of food-related anime will appreciate Shougeki no Soma’s modern take on the cooking genre. This is especially the case given the modernized storyline and captivating graphics. Anyone who watches Food Wars might have an irresistible craving for omurice right after.

Hunter x Hunter (2011-14)

Image via Nippon TV

Young orphan Gon Freecss discovers that his father is still alive, having left home years ago to become a «Hunter,» an elite individual charged with seeking out rare items, unusual creatures, and even dangerous fugitives. After learning this, Gon resolves to join his missing parent’s profession in order to find him. Along the way, he encounters various personalities and supernatural elements.

This anime is actually the second adaptation of the Hunter x Hunter manga, and is evidently a vast improvement over its predecessor, garnering consistent praise for its memorable characters, animation quality spike, and story arcs, particularly the Chimera Ant Arc. Find out what the hype is about on Peacock.

Gintama Movie: Shinyaku Benizakura-hen (Gintama: The Movie)

MAL Rated 8.59, Ranked #65

The Gintama series is a fan favorite. Anime fans all around the world have fallen in love with this series, primarily for its eccentric characters and on point humor. But the goodness doesn’t end there, the action scenes are deftly crafted and are incredibly satisfying to watch.
So how does this movie adaptation hold up?
It holds up very well indeed, and is also one of the very best anime movies of 2010. Gintoki and his crew, Shinpachi and Kagura are back which means that plenty of laughs and badass action are on the menu. Expect even smoother animation and higher production values to an already amazing series.

Katanagatari

White Fox/NIS America

The main character of Katanagatari is a swordsman who doesn’t use swords. Because he doesn’t use swords, he’s immune to the temptations of the 12 magical blades he’s tasked with hunting down.

The premise is simple, but it’s the perfect set up for the show’s incredible action scenes and world. White Fox, the studio behind Katanagatari, uses an understated, almost flattened out style to animate the show that places it somewhere in a gorgeous middle ground between traditional anime and a slightly more western style. Where this style truly shines are the shows fights, which thanks to one combatant being swordless, are some of the strangest and most unique in anime. —Austen Goslin
