6 Moana (2016) — $645M

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Moana rejects the classic story of a damsel in distress finding her Prince Charming. Instead, the 2016 film shows Moana as an independent and adventure-hungry girl drawn to the ocean. She is determined to save her people by returning the Heart of Te Fiti. On her journey, she meets the demigod Maui and both of them journey on an epic quest across the sea. Themes of bravery, family, loyalty and perseverance are present throughout this inspiring Disney film that made $645 million at the worldwide box office. Among the more modern Disney animated releases, this one is a must-watch.

Rapunzel

Even though Rapunzel is shown to be 18 years old, she has never really been allowed to step outside on her own.

However, she feeds a lot on self-realization and, therefore, comes across as the most well-rounded one character in the story.

That said, she hopes to have more than what she has in her tower. Needless to say, this fuels her desire to have long-lasting adventures in order to find her true self.

Sooner than later, she finds out that a major part of her life has been a lie. Be that as it may, Rapunzel’s kind nature is on full display when she is seen trying to sacrifice her contentment to ascertain that Flynn makes it out of her tower successfully.

While she may not have met a lot many people in her life, she does have an inherent idea about what it means to love and have it reciprocated.

6 Little Mermaid Features First Non-Human Disney Princess

IMDb Score: 7.6

The Little Mermaid is another Disney Princess based on a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. Unlike, Frozen, The Little Mermaid stars Disney’s first non-human princess in Ariel, the youngest mermaid daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena, the rulers of the underwater kingdom Atlantica.

Like many young people, Ariel desperately wants a life drastically different from her present reality. She’s obsessed with the world above her and falls in love with a human, Prince Eric. To reach Eric, Ariel strikes a dubious deal with Ursula, an evil sea witch. While The Little Mermaid is beloved by many, Ariel’s lack of autonomy differs from future Disney Princesses.

#2: Cinderella (1950)

Disney released 10 more animated feature films before releasing Cinderella in 1950. Based on two fairy tales: the French Cinderella by Charles Perrault and the German Ashputtel by the Brothers Grimm. In this film, Cinderella is a beautiful young woman forced at a young age to work as a maid for her stepmother and stepsisters after her father dies. When the king’s son refuses to marry, the royal palace holds a ball for all eligible young women and Cinderella sneaks off to the ball with the help of her mice friends and her fairy godmother.

Her character is symbolized by her iconic glass slippers. And while it is implied that her father was a nobleman, Cinderella is the first Disney Princess who has to marry into royalty. Unfortunately, like Snow White, Cinderella is criticized for being anti-feminist as the movie can be interpreted to mean that the only way for a woman to be free is to be beautiful and attract the attention of a wealthy man. However, she’s a step above Snow White in a way that Cinderella has some form of agency and does not give up despite the injustices she has suffered.

Moana

Moana is the titular protagonist of Disney’s animated feature film of the same name. She is quite an adventurer who has an inherent love for the seas.

The viewers get to see how she is chosen by the ocean to voyage across the sea and defend the world after her island falls prey to life-killing darkness.

The shape-shifting demigod Maui tries to always be there for her and help her in the most difficult of times.

As the screenplay proceeds, the viewer finds Moana returning the stolen heart of a goddess to its rightful owner.

While the scene and the song playing in the background are both outstanding, her journey goes on to mainly prove that she is a hero in the true sense of the word.

Mulan

(Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

Mulan (1998)

Interestingly, Mulan isn’t an actual princess, seeing as how she is neither born into nor marries royalty. But who cares about that? She’s one of Disney’s best heroines, a brave young woman who goes to war to save her father and finds herself along the way.

Mulan II (2004)

The plot of Mulan II is rather slight, and mostly revolves around Mulan being opposed to an arranged marriage that will prevent two countries going to war. (Uh, what?) In truth, the movie is really more about Mushu, who isn’t even voiced by Eddie Murphy in this version.

Mulan (2020)

Disney’s attempts to capitalize on the original Mulan continued with their live-action era. Unfortunately, the live-action version of Mulan was different to the original in all sorts of bad ways, and it was dogged by controversy from the word go.

#12: Moana (2016)

The twelfth princess of the Disney Princess roster, Moana is the first Polynesian Princess and the first story not to be based on stories or legends. She is the second princess without a romantic interest and focuses more on her own adventure.

As Moana is ready to take her place as the next village chief of Motunui, strange circumstances drive Moana to believe they have to leave the island, but her father refuses to let her go out of fear of the ocean. However, she discovers that she was chosen to leave the island and restore the heart of Te Fiti before the darkness consumes Motunui and all other islands in the ocean.

10 Cinderella Is A Well-Told But Well-Trod TaleIMDb: 7.3

The story of Cinderella has been adapted countless times in myriad ways. Still, the most famous Cinderella adaptation remains the 1950 Disney film based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale. This version of Cinderella was so successful it propped up Disney following a financially difficult period due to the outbreak of World War II.

Even those few Disney fans who somehow haven’t seen Cinderella likely know the story well. Cinderella’s cruel stepmother bars her from attending the Royal ball. But thanks to her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella doesn’t just go to the ball; she dazzles everyone there, including Prince Charming. While she has to rush out before the clock hits midnight, she leaves behind one clue, a single glass slipper.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

The Little Mermaid is full of lighthearted moments that will make you laugh, touching moments that will bring tears to your eyes, and exciting moments with plenty of action. This classic Disney princess movie is about a mermaid Ariel who dreams of living above the sea and falls in love with a human prince. Disney fans of all ages will enjoy this retelling of the classic fairy-tale as they follow Ariel’s journey to find her true love and happiness.

From Sebastian’s memorable musical number Under The Sea to the suspenseful final act that culminates in an epic battle between good and evil, The Little Mermaid is an unforgettable experience that will still put a smile on your face even 30 years later. It may not be Disney’s most sophisticated film, but is certainly one of their most beloved.

6 Mulan — ‘Mulan’ (2021)

Image via Walt Disney Studios

Niki Caro’s Mulan is the most divisive of the live-action Disney adaptations. The plot follows Hua Mulan, a young woman who poses as a man and takes her father’s place in the Chinese army to defend the empire against an invasion from the Rouran army.

Mulan bears little to no resemblance to the beloved animated classic. Removing most fantasy elements and the songs, the film opts for a weird mix of action and magic, resulting in a tonally uneven film that never seems sure about what it wants to be. Yifei Liu does a good job with the material she is given; the problem is the material is neither similar enough to the revered 1998 animated classic nor unique enough to stand as its own thing. Mulan is a confused retelling of a beloved story, and while Liu does admirably under the circumstances, her take on Mulan is not what fans wanted to see.

Elsa and Anna

(Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

Frozen (2013)

Why didn’t anyone think of putting two princesses (well, one princess, one queen) in a Disney movie before?! Frozen was an absolute runaway hit for Disney and you still can’t go to a toy store without falling over piles of Frozen merch.

Frozen Fever (2015)

This little short debuted in front of the live-action Cinderella and featured a new song for the Arendelle sisters. Nothing important to the overall plot of the Frozen series happens, though, so you’re free to skip it!

Frozen II (2019)

In 2019 (after the next princess on our list, Moana, already had her first movie) Disney released the long-awaited sequel to Frozen. In this one, Elsa and Anna go on a journey to find the source of Elsa’s powers and uncover the long-buried secrets of their kingdom.

What Makes a Disney Princess a Disney Princess?

As a rule of thumb for Disney, a princess’s lineup consists of princesses by royalty, birth, or marriage. In some cultures, that extends to being the daughter of a chief, like Pocahontas. The only exception to this rule is Mulan—she gained the status by doing a heroic deed.

To be a Disney princess, one should be gentle and kind to everyone, humans and non-humans. Furthermore, Disney princesses have to meet certain criteria, such as being a focal point of the story and being human or human-looking (think Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”).

All Disney princesses possess inner and outer beauty traits and are considered loving, caring, giving, merciful, and graceful. In addition, Disney princesses are kind to animals and have the ability to communicate with them, which is why they’re almost always portrayed accompanied by a loveable animal sidekick.

Incoming Disney Princesses Movies

As we mentioned, the Disney princess movie list is about to get some new additions—and very soon! According to Disney officials, here are the newest Disney live actions we can all look forward to.

Snow White (March 22, 2024)

We couldn’t be more thrilled to see the new Snow White live-action Disney film, but we’ll have to wait for almost a year for it. Company officials have announced the making of the newest Disney princess live-action movie, “Snow White,” starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White, and modern-day Wonderwoman, Gal Gadot as the evil Queen.

Not much is shared about the upcoming movie, though, so we can only wait and see what masterpiece Disney cooks up for the world to gobble up next. Will the original Disney princess bite the poisoned apple? Will the happy ending come? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is an iconic film and one of the most important movies of the 20th century. It launched Disney’s feature animation division with a movie that shocked the public simply for existing. It will forever be an important part of film history.

Yet, while Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has some great music and the Wicked Queen was apparently so legitimately terrifying for little kids that things had a tendency to , this movie also is only of middling rank. That’s because Snow White isn’t the most exciting main character in Disney history, although the seven dwarfs that surround her do a great job to make up for that.

Kim Possible

There is no denying the fact that being a teenager is super tough and that we have all been through that phase in our respective lives.

It is not surprising then that most of the problems that can be solved rather amicably come across as completely destructive while we are teenagers.

However, Kim Possible is someone who seems to have balanced her teenage life quite well. How she has managed to do that is way beyond me, to be honest.

Furthermore, she seems to have vowed to stop any and every crime that she sees unfurl before her eyes.

Also, she has a ton of superpowers to boot. Well, that perhaps explains how she managed to do so well for herself at such a young age.

Merida

A Scottish princess from the kingdom of DunBroch, Merida is the central protagonist of the Disney-Pixar animated film Brave.

She is a warrior in the true sense of the word. Reasonable and skillful, she knows how to wield a number of dangerous weapons.

Needless to say, Merida is a go-getter who does not need a man to come to her aid; precisely why a lot many women do and should resonate with her character.

Having said that, she also realizes when she makes a mistake. Her brave and dedicated personality is what makes her a true-blue Princess and, indeed, one of the finest Disney female characters of all time.

Cinderella

Cinderella is someone who seems to have been dedicated to doing good. She continues to keep her calm and is always humble; even when she is constantly perturbed by her condescending stepmother and cruel stepsisters.

However, an observant can also go on to assert that she is often seen running around and screaming, albeit not as loud as Snow White.

Even though she comes off as a one-dimensional character, she does manage to provide certain unforgettable moments to her viewers.

For example, one can never forget how she readies food for a crowd of mice. Also, one has to give it to her for keeping her calm even in the harshest of situations.

Indeed, a Cinderella is a rarity in today’s age and world.

Sister Mary Clarence

Whoopi Goldberg hit the ball out of the park with her outstanding portrayal of Sister Mary Clarence in the Sister Act series of motion pictures.

This passionate and endearing character turns a class of teenagers into a superb award-winning choir.

While Goldberg may have been involved with a lot of popular projects throughout her career, her character projection of Clarence continues to remain her most popular work to date.

Also, we seldom see a sequel turning out to be better than its predecessor. However, Whoopi Goldberg’s performance ensured that Sister Act 2 surpassed the first installment of the franchise successfully.

5 Belle — ‘Beauty and The Beast’ (2017)

Image Via Disney

When Emma Watson was announced as Disney’s choice to play the live-action Belle in Beauty and the Beast, fans were ecstatic. Watson was a beloved actress, coming off of years of building goodwill thanks to the endlessly rewatchable Harry Potter franchise. The film was one of Disney’s most acclaimed efforts, and the studio was coming off a great year following the critical and commercial success of Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book.

Unfortunately, the role of Belle might’ve been a tad out of Watson’s league, at least in the singing department. Although the actress tries her best, her voice isn’t where it needs to be to do classic numbers like «Belle» justice. Watson’s performance is fine, although the film’s use of CGI to create the Beast creates a weird dynamic with her co-star, Dan Stevens. In other words, the romantic chemistry necessary to sell such a timeless love story as Beauty and the Beast isn’t there in the 2017 live-action.

Maleficent

An incarnation of pure evil, Maleficent is the main antagonist and, quite frankly, the poster child of Disney Studios.

First seen in the animated feature film Sleeping Beauty, she is a malicious fairy who happens to be responsible for all the hardship in King Stefan’s kingdom.

Ever since her debut in 1959, Maleficent’s evil reputation has preceded her. She commands tremendous powers and has set new benchmarks for other wicked characters to follow over the years.

Needless to say, she is referred to as the undisputed Mistress of All Evil for a solid reason. It is not surprising then that she is both infamous and iconic in equal measure.

The character has also been played by Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie in the Maleficent series of feature films.

Moana (2016)

Image Source: The New York Times

Among the more modern Disney princess movies, Moana follows a young Polynesian navigator who embarks on an incredible journey across the sea with her demigod companion Maui. Along their way, they face dangers and find themselves challenged by tough decisions. The Disney soundtrack really brings this movie to life as it captures the epic adventure in all its glory. The makers sprinkle in some humor and heartening moments to round out this amazing Disney movie experience.

The animation is stunning and boasts vivid colors that will make even the most jaded Disney fans swoon. We can’t talk about Moana without mentioning its star-studded voice cast. Disney tapped Auli’i Cravalho to bring the titular character to life among others including Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. All this talent combined with Disney’s animation and storytelling prowess makes Moana an absolute must watch.

Grab your popcorn, get ready to sing along, and don’t forget your tissues — you’re going to need them.

Megara

Megara might find it difficult to trust people in her life but she is one of the more fleshed-out Disney female characters that we are including in our piece today.

Her distrust of the people stems from the fact that she has been backstabbed in her life. This makes her wary of individuals who wish to get close to her.

However, as the screenplay of the motion picture proceeds, one does see her opening up a bit. Also, she can be seen sacrificing a lot for Hercules by the time the story climaxes.

Her willingness to sacrifice things for the person that she adores is what sets her apart from the rest of the crowd.

Dory

Well, our beloved Dory might be a forgetful fish, but we are not going to make the mistake of forgetting to give her a much-deserved spot on our list.

While this adventure-loving character might not be the smartest fish in the sea, she has truly gone on to set a benchmark when it comes to her caring personality.

Even though she suffers from short-term memory loss, she does try to help anyone who needs her.

Needless to mention, this optimistic fish has a heart of pure gold and deserves all the praise and attention in the world.

So, what are you waiting for? Go get acquainted with Dory if you haven’t already!

Elizabeth Swann

Elizabeth Swann is the tritagonist of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise of motion pictures. The series starts by showing the character to be in possession of an artifact, which makes her a target of the pirates.

However, she is saved by Captain Jack Sparrow quite a few times before she learns to fight for and defend herself.

As the franchise reaches its finale, the viewers get to see Swann earning the position of Pirate King and, therefore, becoming the very first woman to hold the title.

She is a strong woman who gathers the required strength over time. She strives to use her feminity and power to get through to the men around her.

Minnie Mouse

Even though her boyfriend Mickey Mouse might be more popular than her, Minnie has continued to make her presence felt right from the start. She made her debut appearance in 1928’s Steamboat Willie and was seen playing the traditional damsel in distress.

However, her character has evolved over time to have more layers. Needless to say, she can be seen being reasonable and frank when she has to be.

She can also not stand someone being mean to her. A true-blue style icon and a symbol of femininity, Minnie is someone one can easily fall in love with.

A lot many young women have come to identify themselves with this character since its inception decades ago.

Принцесса (2008)

Shuri

Shuri, the Princess of Wakanda, is first and foremost a Marvel Comics character who can be seen making her presence felt both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in Marvel Animation.

She is a master engineer who has contributed in a big way to the overall advancement of Wakanda’s technology.

That said, she is as great a warrior as she is an engineer and can be seen using her knowledge of technology to create weapons that only she knows how to wield.

While most of us stop trying to fix our computers when turning them on and off doesn’t seem to work, Shuri is someone who can deprogram humans just as easily.

Aladdin (1992)

Aladdin’s got all of Disney’s classic ingredients — an iconic Disney Princess in Jasmine, catchy songs and music, hilarious side-kicks like Genie and Abu, and of course the handsome Prince Ali. The animation is vibrant, the colors pop off the screen and you’ll find yourself right in Agrabah — the magical city where Aladdin lives. Get ready to be transported to a whole new world!

The film follows Aladdin, an orphan living on the streets of Agrabah who falls in love with Princess Jasmine. But alas, she only accepts proposals from princes — so when he’s tricked into entering the Cave of Wonders, Aladdin stumbles upon Genie (voiced by Robin Williams), who promises to make him a prince if he sets him free. With Genie’s help, Aladdin becomes Prince Ali and woos Jasmine — all while staying one step ahead of the villainous Jafar.

In true Disney fashion there are lots of laughs, plenty of singing and dancing, and even some heartwarming moments between Aladdin and his trusty sidekick Abu. Aladdin is a great Disney movie to watch with the family or just by yourself. Treat yourself and take a magical carpet ride through Agrabah with Aladdin and Jasmine!

Who knows — you might just find yourself singing ‘A Whole New World’ for days!

#3: Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Technically speaking, Princess Aurora should have been the fourth Disney Princess on this list after Tinkerbell of the 1953 film, Peter Pan. However, after Tinkerbell was removed from the roster in 2005 (so that she could be the headliner of Disney’s other franchise, Disney Fairies), Aurora technically became the third oldest princess on the list.

The third Disney Princess appearing in Disney’s 16th animated feature film, Princess Aurora is based on French, German, and Russian stories. She is the daughter of a king and queen betrothed to a prince of a neighboring kingdom at birth. However, her parents anger the evil fairy Maleficent and she is cursed to die on her 16th birthday. To protect Aurora, three fairies agree to raise her in secret until the day after her 16th birthday so that they can avoid the prophecy.

While the Disney Princess website says Aurora encourages children to be curious and “always wonder,” but critics point out how Aurora had very little involvement in her own story. She was not aware of her curse nor did she do anything to stop it. In fact, despite it being a movie about Princess Aurora, Philip got much more time featuring himself slaying the dragon. When I try to recall the movie, some of the most memorable parts include the fairies using magic to prepare Aurora’s 16th birthday party and Maleficent taunting Philip.
