2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters holds the title of the worst MonsterVerse entry to date. The film has various monsters unleashed upon the Earth, including Godzilla’s rival, King Ghidorah. Though its special effects and action sequences were widely praised, pretty much every other element of the film was lambasted by critics and fans alike. The film essentially took the criticisms of its 2014 predecessor and went in the opposite direction for the worst.
The pacing and storyline were poorly handled, with much of the film being more interested in dropping Easter eggs and references to past films in the franchise than telling a good story. The tone and scope went from a horrifying and intimate ground-level look at the monsters’ mayhem to a generic, quip-filled blockbuster that felt like a worse imitation of other films. This ultimately resulted in a disappointing box office take, which was blamed on an amorphous «monster fatigue» of all things. Many feared Godzilla: King of Monsters’ poor word of mouth would result in diminished anticipation for the follow-up, though that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Godzilla (2014): — 69
The second-best MonsterVerse entry is 2014’s Godzilla, though it’s still divisive in its own right. The film features Godzilla attacking California while other monsters called Mutos attempt to reproduce. The monster horror occurs amidst the backdrop of a human drama, involving the government’s rampant destruction and coverup of the monsters’ existence.
Godzilla’s tone and scope were meant as a throwback to the original 1954 Godzilla film, focusing more on the humans and the effects of the monsters’ attacks. This was somewhat criticized, with the abrupt switching from monster-sized destruction to human perspectives being a bit jarring and disappointing at times. Despite this, Godzilla was well-received and built anticipation for where future movies could go.
Godzilla vs. Kong — 70
The epic throwdown that all of the Monsterverse films were building up to was Godzilla vs. Kong, which pits the atomic lizard against the protector of Skull Island for the first time since the 60s. The reception, at the time of writing, has been mostly positive. However it seems to be following the more thoughtless, action-oriented direction of the 2019 film. The action scenes and the interaction between the title monsters have been heavily praised, with overseas audiences especially lapping the film up at the cinema. Time can only tell if Godzilla vs. Kong will generate enough interest to continue the series and, if so, where it will go from there.

Kong: Skull Island — 68.5
The second worst reviewed MonsterVerse entry was 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which actually received fairly positive reviews. It delivered a new and decidedly different cinematic incarnation of King Kong than seen in previous films by notably eschewing the trite «beauty and the beast.» The plot has the Monarch organization seeking to study Kong while a vengeful military officer wants to kill the Titan instead.
Many lauded the movie for its special effects, action sequences and commentary on events such as the Vietnam War. Though they were certainly more well-rounded than some examples in the genre, the biggest criticisms involved character development.

When I ranked the King Kong movies, I put Kong: Skull Island at number 2, placing it just below the original, 1933, movie, and for good reason: it is an absolute banger. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John C. Reilly, Kong: Skull Island is the only MonsterVerse movie that I think did everything right.
One, King Kong is amazing, full of personality and pathos. Two, the action is always well lit and fun. Three, the time period is well established and utilized perfectly. And four, even the human characters are interesting! I think that last point is the most important of all, because unlike the other MonsterVerse movies, where the human characters are sort of just there, this movie actually makes us feel something for them. So much so, in fact, that King Kong almost feels like a side character in his own movie.
Some fans might not like this last point, but honestly, I much prefer a human story FEATURING monsters (a la Cloverfield), rather than just a straight up slobberknocker. Sure, I do love my monster battles, but what’s the point of a monster battle if we don’t have human characters to get behind? I might as well just if I wanted to see two monsters wrasslin’.
So, for that human element alone, I think Kong: Skull Island is the best movie in the MonsterVerse. But, what do you think? For more news on all things MonsterVerse, make sure to stomp by here often.

Flash forward five years later as more and more Titans — some good, some bad — are waking up to wreak havoc across the planet. A lot of the classic Toho monsters arrive on the scene in this one, including the gigantic insect Mothra, the fiery pterodactyl/bird/bat creature Rodan, and the fierce three-headed space dragon King Ghidorah. On the human side, Project Monarch again plays a central role in the narrative, with Drs. Serizawa and Graham returning from Godzilla along with Admiral Stenz. We also meet Dr. Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler), an ex-Monarch scientist whose family was torn apart during the Godzilla vs. the MUTOs rampage five years prior, and his daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown). Additionally, Joe Morton plays an older version of the character Corey Hawkins played in Kong: Skull Island, giving this film a more direct connection to the prequel. As usual, the monsters are awesome, while the human characters are … a little less so. And though the film points to a future in which Titans and humans can co-exist, it also teases that things might not be quite settled just yet. After all, there are plenty of more sequels to be made!

Король пропавших титанов монстров

Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021)
Directed by Adam Wingard, and starring KING KONG AND GODZILLA (oh, and Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, and some other people, yada, yada, yada), I think you can probably already tell from that introduction why Godzilla vs. Kong is better than the two Godzilla movies in the MonsterVerse, and that’s because the main stars of this epic battle are undoubtedly King Kong and Godzilla.
Not only that, but Godzilla (because of reasons) is actually the bad guy in this movie, whereas which side he was on in the previous MonsterVerse movies was always a bit more nebulous. (Is he fighting for humans, or is he fighting for nature?) Godzilla vs. Kong is also just a genuinely entertaining movie. Here’s the plot: Godzilla doesn’t like King Kong, and King Kong doesn’t like Godzilla. So, they gotta duke it out. Honestly, a lot can be said for just giving the people what they want, and people wanted to see Godzilla fight King Kong, so that’s what we got.
I’m a huge Godzilla fan who’s seen every last one of the Toho movies, and I can honestly say that America’s Godzilla vs. Kong is superior to Japan’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. I would put it at the top of this list if not for one other movie in the MonsterVerse.

Godzilla (2014)
You know, I’ve kind of warmed up to 2014’s Godzilla. While I still prefer the 1998 Godzilla movie to the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies (I’m sorry, but I do), I think it’s taken me all these years to truly appreciate what 2014’s film was trying to accomplish. Now, I’m not saying that it actually did accomplish what it set out to do, which was create a wholly different Godzilla from that of Toho, and also separate it from 1998’s movie (a hard reset, if you will), I still admire its restraint, which I’ll get back to in a second.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston (sort of), Godzilla is one big tantalizing tease of a movie. We’re shown several shots of Godzilla just about to fight, or the wreckage after he fought, but it’s only in the last few minutes of the film that we actually get to see him go to war (and in the dark, no less).
I know a lot of Godzilla fans (I’m one of them, mind you) are quick to point out that the big G wasn’t much in the original movie either, but that movie didn’t need to tease Godzilla to make him a threat. The 1954 movie had an apocalyptic tone to it that is unnerving all the way through. The 2014 version, however, is the equivalent of blue balls. Not only that, but they even kill off Cranston halfway through. That alone keeps it out of the top two.

On March 25, , producers Alex Garcia and Zach Shields discussed the potential plans for the Monsterverse beyond 2020, and suggested the possibility that Legendary could continue the series beyond 2020 if Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong performed well. On May 7, Michael Dougherty expressed interest in directing a prequel set in prehistoric times exploring how primitive humans survived against the Titans, humanity’s first encounter with Godzilla, and how its relationship with Godzilla was christened.
On April 27, 2021, following the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that director Adam Wingard was in early talks with Legendary Pictures to direct a fifth Monsterverse film, with Son of Kong a potential title.
Max Borenstein told ScreenRant on August 3, 2021, «I’ve heard some exciting things that are happening that I can’t divulge. They have a great handle on things there and I certainly have thoughts and am always excited when I get involved in them. I think it’s in good hands and with the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, there will be some new, interesting installments coming. Without being able to say any of that officially, you can look at the fact that that film performed and people really responded to it. I think it was really wonderful timing for people to have that towards the end of that surge in the pandemic, people really felt eager to see something that was fun and joyful in the cinema and it was really exciting to have our movie be that movie.»
Australian news outlet The Courier Mail broke the news that a new entry in the franchise was officially in development on March 20, 2022 (the 21st in Australia). Production began on July 29, 2022, with Wingard returning as director.Legendary Pictures released a teaser for the film on April 19, , revealing its title as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
MonsterVerse Movies and Shows in Chronological Order

The advantage of watching the MonsterVerse movies in chronological order is that it doesn’t have too many installments under its belt just yet, so you don’t have too many different timelines and plot threads crisscrossing and doubling back on each other. Also, beginning your watch-through with Kong: Skull Island, even though it’s the second film in the series in terms of release date, gives you a better understanding of whom the monster-hunting government organization Monarch is and what they’re up to right off the bat. You’d also be leading off with what many consider to be the best film in the series thus far, which definitely doesn’t hurt.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
On paper, Godzilla: King of the Monsters should have been the greatest American movie of all time. Check this out. Not only does it have Godzilla in it, but it also has two of Godzilla’s greatest enemies in Rodan and King Ghidorah, as well as the sometimes friend, sometimes enemy, Mothra. I mean, could you get a better American movie? It may not have been Destroy All Monsters, but it was about as close as we were going to get.
So, why is it at the bottom of this list then? Well, because it was a colossal misfire. Directed by Michael Dougherty, and starring the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Charles Dance, amongst others, it had the same problem as its predecessor of having too many lackluster human characters, but magnified.
It also didn’t help that the movie was incredibly dark. Whenever we got massive monster action, it was usually shown in some kind of dark storm, hiding most of the best bits. Yes, the film definitely has its moments, most notably in the scenes featuring . But, between all of the boring family drama, and the dark battles, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is decidedly mid.
