It’s a love letter to classic anime series like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Outlaw Star with enough original material to bring it into the same conversation as those iconic shows. It’s got bounty hunters, coin-operated mechs, insanely powerful androids, and a splash of magic to throw an extra aspect into the kitchen sink of a series. Somehow it all works.

The steampunk’d fantasy land of Gearbolt is the setting for a tale that follows a trio of misfits who are thrown together against all odds. There’s S.A.M., the naive, high-end, friendship robot who’s on a mission to reunite with her best friend—and heir to besieged kingdom—Kelby; her pal Casey Turnbuckle, an out-dated, repair robot in search of an upgrade; and wanted outlaw Philly the Kid, an immortal fugitive who drives the Cadillac Eldorado, which just so happens to transform into a giant fighting mech. It’s a fantastic trio on their own, but the characters they meet along the way add a lot of variety to the mix. Kenji Nakamura’s 2007 series Mononoke is a cult favorite among anime enthusiasts who prefer a more eccentric and esoteric take on your average supernatural horror fiction. A spinoff of the 2006 anthology anime Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke follows the adventures of the “Medicine Seller,” a mysterious, wandering exorcist of sorts who travels across Edo-period Japan in search of wayward spirits whose unresolved emotional attachments have caused them to transform into malicious entities that feed and prey on negative human emotions. Divided into roughly five different storylines, the 12-episode anime sees the Medicine Seller using his various supernatural abilities to deduce the cause behind a spirit’s inability to part from the physical plane and successfully exorcise them using a sword that can only be unsheathed when the identity and motivations of the spirit are made known.

The real strength of Mononoke is through its animation and avant-garde art style, drawing inspiration from classical Japanese illustration and painting techniques to create a world of bright palettes, flamboyant characters, and beautiful textures that feel like a ukiyo-e painting brought to life. If you’re a fan of Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, you should make the time to watch this series, and even if you’re not, you should take the opportunity to catch up on the series before the feature-length anime film premieres next year. —TE

This anime has got it all. I was a bit wary at first, seeing as the main characters were animals, not humans. But the first episode alone will make you throw away any qualms because it’s so amazing. The opening song, the animation, direction, plot – what’s not to appreciate? The show has made its own society of carnivores and herbivores.

They’ve learned to live in harmony. That is until a herbivore is murdered at the hands of a carnivore. Tensions are high as the culprit is not caught. I loved how they explored so many themes and depicted the internal conflict of the main character, Legoshi. This is easily one of the best anime on Netflix.

Therefore, becoming the new tyrannical rulers of Liones.

The Knights tried to murder the royal family. However, Elizabeth escaped (3rd princess of Liones). To survive and retake her Kingdom, she seeks out the help of the Seven Deadly Sins.  If you like an adventure with a lot of action, fighting scenes, characters you can grow to love, and a story that drives you, then I’d recommend you to watch this anime on Netflix.

The series also introduces Captain Levi Ackerman, the calm and collected ace of the Scout Regiment who is easily one of the most stan-worthy figures in anime.

Ajin: Demi-Human

Directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, this series follows Kei Nagai, a pre-med student who resurrects after a car accident. He’s Ajin, an immortal demi-human, now on the run from government experiments and searching for other beings like himself. Despite its relatively standard entry point for a seinen anime intent on exploring how humans behave; Ajin perfectly capitalizes on the violence and cat-and-mouse elements of the maga and pairs it with creepy, and atmospheric 3D animation. So, if evading capture, not knowing friend from foe and uncovering secret organizations with agendas of their own is your bag this is the  quick-paced, visually rich, thrill ride for you.

Ouran High School Host Club (2006)

At the elite Ouran Academy, Haruhi Fujioka, the rare scholarship student with a humble background, unintentionally enters the room of the Host Club—where “handsome boys with too much time on their hands entertain and charm girls who also have too much time on their hands.” After accidentally breaking an antique vase worth a fortune, Haruhi starts to run errands for the Host Club to pay off her debt. Soon, she is recruited as a host because of her androgynous looks to entertains girls under the guise of being a boy. Ouran High School Host Club completely embraces its over-the-top nature, with the ludicrous behaviors of the hosts—and the guests—providing a sharp, humorous contrast to Haruhi’s level-headed, matter-of-fact personality. But the show isn’t only notable for its comedic value. Released more than a decade ago, the show was ahead of its time in introducing a female lead who does not adhere to gender norms.

Hunter x Hunter is a 165-episode gift. Yes, there’s a cannibal furry arc. Yes, the clown man (OK, magician) is naked all the time. But look beyond the fact that I can’t describe this series in a way that will convince my friends to watch it. Hunter x Hunter is the pinnacle of shōnen anime. There’s not a shred of filler in it. A particular arc that involves Gon and pals fighting in the 251-floor Heavens Arena is the perfect example of Hunter x Hunter’s economy of storytelling: it only spends 10 episodes there, and the narrative payoff is so good.

By the time I reached the 61-episode-long Chimera Ant arc (shut up), I would have died for these characters, and Hunter x Hunter is at times so emotionally wrenching that I nearly did. —Simone de Rochefort

“Sword Gai” is a manga and anime series about a young man named Gai. When he was a baby, he was found holding a cursed katana called “Shiryū,” which caused his mother to take her own life. This katana, along with many others, turns its users into monstrous creatures called Busoma, driven by a desire to kill.

Gai lost his arm during a ceremony meant to control the katana’s power, and his mentor Amon turned it into a prosthetic limb. Gai gains the ability to merge with his weapon and becomes a being called a “Chrysalis.” He fights to keep his humanity intact while battling the Busoma, who threaten humanity’s existence.

The review for “Sword Gai: The Animation” is mixed. Some viewers believe it tries to depict human emotions like anger, fear, and greed, but it received negative reviews overall. The story is simple to understand, but the plot lacks coherence and includes unrelated vignettes. The main character, Gai, is portrayed as an emo/loner type, and his connection with the cursed sword adds depth to his character. However, the show still suffers from forgettable characters, poor dialogue, and mediocre visuals. It’s not recommended by the reviewer, who suggests watching other anime like “B: The Beginning” instead.

Everything about Dorohedoro is bizarre. After a sorcerer cast a spell on Caiman, he wakes up with his human face replaced by a lizard head and his memories gone. It isn’t anything out of the ordinary in many ways, considering he lives in the desolate and doomed “Hole” where magic users regularly practice curses on the non-magic, leaving them mutated or dead. In order to undo the spell, Caiman embarks on a journey to find and kill the sorcerer who cursed him. Violent and gory but packed with humor, Dorohedoro is a revenge tale meets black comedy in the best way. Its greatest charm is creating an ensemble of deadly but quirky villains who are just as endearing as—if not more than—Caiman and his equally odd crew.

Good Night World

Based on the manga by the same name, Good Night World follows the Akabanea family who’ve, although estranged in the real world, found a sense of peace and unknowingly find their way to one another in a VR game called Planet. Directed by Katsuya Kikuchi with stylized character designs by Suzuna Okuyama and dynamic visuals animated by studio NAZ, leverages its understanding of gaming as a hefty connective thread between the real and digital world to anchor its story and use in-game elements and relationship building to best use. This story of a family battling debilitating grief and how it’s ravaged their lives and relationships in the real world is surprisingly well-suited to video game anime. The MMO style world introduces plenty of opportunity for monsters, battles and quests with choices the consequences of ripple into the far more somber real world. This family of four must confront their trauma and grief in ways that force them to acknowledge death, their dependence on the game, and what that means for them in the real world. 

Good Night World’s strength lies in the human element and intimate care taken with the vital, if winding, path of emotional growth playing this game sets this broken family on. Despite a few wobbly story elements and some pacing inconsistencies episode to episode (due to being occasionally thematically overly ambitious), Good Night World  makes for an constantly entertaining and deeply affecting story about relationship building, escapism and unavoidable if often grim nature of reality certain to resonate with those who like a bit of philosophical and existential angst with their escapism.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Based on the wildly popular manga series, this multigenerational story follows the adventures of a Joestar family member — each with the same titular nickname and endowed with immense psychic strength  — as they battle against rivals (and evil) down through the ages. With each new protagonist comes an independent story that expands the universe and keeps the narrative fresh and engaging. It’s sly wit and frequent hattips to popular Western trends add just the right amount of hilarity to this adventure-driven fantasy. With five quality seasons (Stone Ocean being the latest installment) now available on Netflix as of December 1st, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s addition to the best of  list may just be a bit overdue.
